A really complex wine that starts juicy, silky and spicy before turning dark and mineral. Needs at least until 2018 if not 2019 to open up, and the very long, cool finish suggests this has at least a couple of decades ahead of it.
A forceful nose features peach, earthy raw pumpkin and pungent orange zest. Hints of lanolin and resin from oak segue comfortably into the waxen-textured and expansive palate, with fullness born of around 13% alcohol, the highest level reached among Christmann’s vintage 2016 Rieslings, and softness born of a mere 6.8 grams acidity. As with a number of his 2016s, the finish here is more understated at this early stage than the nose might have led one to anticipate. But the combination of juicy fresh fruit with earthy intrigue is satisfying and highly persistent.
Many growers called the harvest of 2016 relaxed, because the extended Indian summer afforded them a much wider window for picking than previous vintages. This enabled every individual vintner to bring in their fruit according to the style they were looking for, and Steffen Christmann seems to prefer elegance over opulence. With the Hofstück he was spot on, getting a delightful herbal freshness, delicate fruit and trim body. Sophisticated Grosses Gewächs. (MS)
