The Barrua is a blend of around 85% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. According to Susan Hulme (93 points) from Decanter, the 2018 vintage is a “stylish blend” that offers notes of “blackcurrant, tomato leaf, sweet spice and cinnamon aromas” – a “classy” expression of Sardinia that is “concentrated without being too heavy”. Alison Napjus (92 points, Wine Spectator) finds it to be “fresh and focused, with a rich vein of tangy mineral echoing on the finish”, recommending some short-term aging for the Barrua 2018 to show its full potential.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, porcini, baking spices, rosemary and dried flowers. It’s full-bodied with firm tannins. Tight and compact on the palate with good structure and lively acidity. Firm finish. Drink in 2024.

An elegant, medium- to full-bodied red, but with a gusty core of tannins and tightly knit flavors ripe black raspberry and blackberry fruit, delicate herbes de Provence, green olive and a touch of melted black licorice. It's fresh and focused, with a rich vein of tangy mineral echoing on the finish. Lovely now, but this should start to shine with short-term aging. Carignano, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2033. 12,500 cases made, 800 cases imported. — AN

Crushed wild berries, violets, incense and sweet spices lift up from the 2016 Barrua. It is silky in texture with a polished display of red and black fruits, well balanced by tactile mineral notes that form toward the close. Hints of fine tannin linger throughout the pretty, purple-tinged finale. The 2016 could use another year or two to flesh out a bit, but I expect that it will always be a more lifted and leaner expression of Barrua. This is a blend of 70% Carignan, 10% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

About Agricola Punica

In the 1980s, as Sardinian wine producers began to shift their focus to producing quality wines, the director of Cantina Santadi (a wine co-operative) Antonello Pilloni approached the famous Antinori oenologist Giacomo Tachis for advice. Also known as the “father of Super Tuscans”, Tachis was heavily involved in the creation of new genres of Italian wines such as Sassicaia, Solaia and Tignanello - and he quickly saw how the Carignano grape could shape the identity of the region.

In 2002, Tachis partnered with Cantina Santadi and Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta of Sassicaia to form Agricola Punica, with the aim of creating “Sardinian wines with an international breath” by borrowing the methods of the Super Tuscans.
