What does perfection taste like? I've sampled this wine twice - once in Gevrey and once in London - and I have no hesitation in saying that this is it. There's 100% new oak here, but the wine has digested it, like an lion swallowing an antelope. Sikly, fine and effortlessly structured, it's the kind of wine that makes Burgundy lovers dewy eyed. Still a ittle closed at this stage, but this has everything in place for a long life: concentration, fruit, vanilla oak and structure.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru has a touch of mint on the nose, complementing the mixture of red and black fruit, a pastille-like purity developing with time. This is very charming and the oak is neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the acidity perfectly judged and lending the tension and poise one expects from a Chambertin. It does lose a little intensity in the glass but it's from such a high point it is neither here nor there. This is a wonderful Chambertin.

Domaine Armand Rousseau is considered one of the greatest domaines in all of Burgundy dating back to founder Armand’s decision to eschew the prevailing Burgundy negociant system of the 18th and 19th century in favour of bottling his own domaine wines in the 1930s. The domaine has since been succeeded by son Charles in 1959 and later to grandson Eric who looks after the estate today. The domaine has 14 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin with their Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Beze and Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques considered their crowning achievements.
