Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2016 (6x75cl)
I’m making this for Syrah fanatics”, says Reenen Borman. Lucky them is all I can say, because this is another stunning release from a brilliant young winemaker. Intense, granitic and spicy, with lovely lavender and garrigue aromas, layers of dark, inky fruit, stylish oak and amazing length. What more do you want from a Syrah? 2020-30

Grapes from a single vineyard planted on granite in 1996, winemaking involved 20% wholebunch fermentation before maturation lasting 14 months in barrel, 15% new followed by a further period of some three months in tank.
The nose displays notes of flowers (violets rather than lavender) and fynbos before red fruit, olive and white pepper. The palate shows pure fruit, fresh acidity and powdery tannins – it’s a wine that’s not insubstantial (alcohol is 14%) but nor is it cumbersome. In fact, it’s really nicely judged managing to combine intricacy with sheer likeability.
The 2016 Epilogue, the flagship label from Boschkloof, is 100% Syrah matured in 20% new oak. It has an irresistible bouquet of white pepper and garrigue scents. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin, garrigue-infused red fruit and touches of brown spice and black olive toward the long, sustained but approachable finish. Excellent.
