Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year.

5 Star Wine. A glowing mid crimson purple. The bouquet is enchanting with the white pepper and rose petal lift from the whole bunches, a little under half. Perfectly judged ripeness. The wine is beautifully discreet on the palate, but it is all there. Not super concentrated but detailed, precise and entirely in balance. Note: one of the ways in which Cyprien ensures a first class result with his Clos de la Roche is by marking up underperforming vines and deselecting their fruit at the picking stage. Benjamin used some whole bunch vinification, which he did not in Clos St-Denis. Fullish purple. Not yet racked so this fine Clos de la Roche will gain in purity what it already has in density. A splendid long rich finish, high class fruit throughout. A little more body than the Clos St-Denis. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.

5 Star Wine. A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.

Rich dense purple. Gorgeously attractive if a little more restrained than the Clos St-Denis. Some of the traditional blueberry. So much in reserve. I prefer the weave of the texture here especially if keeping for the longer term. On the cusp of red and black fruit at the finish, and with excellent persistence. Drink from 2032-2040+. Mid smudgy crimson. Stunningly vibrant aroma of red cherry and peony (winemaker Grégory Patriat suggests violets). I'd be happy to wear this as perfume. Smells intensely sweet but also tart and tangy. All that on the palate, too. Firm, dry texture, layered super-fine tannins are almost chalky. Fabulous wine. If only I could afford to drink it! I am suggesting an early start date for the drinking window because I could actually drink this now though it is sure to have a very long life.

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.

Two barrels, both new, 25% whole bunch vinification. Medium deep ruby in colour, with an elegance and style behind, very seductive, with some bright red fruits, alpine strawberry, a fine tensile backbone and very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023.

Burghound (94-97)

(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging.
