Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year.

(5 Star Wine) 10% new wood, about to be bottled. A similar rich crimson purple colour. A savoury and stylish deep red fruit on the nose, with spice behind. A pretty fantastic example of Chorey with life and depth, dark cherry fruit. Excellent tension, I think this will be gorgeous. Long, fine and sensual. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted: November 2023.

Hailing from the celebrated terroirs of Burgundy, the Jessica Litaud Macon Fuisse 2022 is an exceptional specimen of French finesse. Jessica Litaud, a boutique, family-run estate, artistically weaves complex, mineral-driven flavours into this distinguished expression of Chardonnay.

Crafted in the heart of the Maconnais region of Southern Burgundy, this esteemed wine is nuanced with the quintessential characteristics of its limestone and clay soils. A masterful balance of richness and freshness is achieved through judiciously controlled, traditional winemaking methods.

The Jessica Litaud Macon Fuisse 2022 is an elegant offering with a vibrant golden hue, opening up a palate of ripe orchard fruits, honeyed melon, and a sprinkling of toasted hazelnuts. The finish, encapsulating undertones of citrus and stone fruit, leaves a lingering minerality, emblematic of its place of production. This is a wine that brings the artistry of Burgundian winemaking to your glass and captivates the senses, sip after exquisite sip.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-90)

Not quite as deep a purple and the nose is a little more refined, less exuberant. There is no shortage of quality fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, a few more tannins, but they are ripe enough. The fruit covers the final structure very nicely. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.

Burghound (94-97)

(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging.
