Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

(Maison) Louis Jadot Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
(3x75cl)
2022

Burgundy | - | 90-93 (IB) | HK$8,965.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023. |

Burgundy | - | 96-98 (IB) | HK$12,670.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)5 Star Wine. More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2022 Aloxe-Corton Village was partially affected by hail and is the only cuvée to include whole bunches, which works well on the nose and has more freshness than the Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichets. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannins, and good tension on the finish. Delightful. |

Burgundy | - | 87-90 (IB) | HK$2,745.00
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-90)Mid crimson, with very little nose. The is a wealth of red fruit, but then the tannins are rather dry. This cuvée is usually a little more elegant. The finish suggests though that this will all come together. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)The first to be picked, which is unusual. A mid crimson colour with some dark raspberry and plum fruit, showing a bit more than the Chapitre. A succulent rich raspberry fruit on the palate., some tannins but nicely interwoven. The two Aloxe 1ers Crus seem to have traded places this year, and for once I have a clear preference for the Vercots. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Hailing from the celebrated terroirs of Burgundy, the Jessica Litaud Macon Fuisse 2022 is an exceptional specimen of French finesse. Jessica Litaud, a boutique, family-run estate, artistically weaves complex, mineral-driven flavours into this distinguished expression of Chardonnay. Crafted in the heart of the Maconnais region of Southern Burgundy, this esteemed wine is nuanced with the quintessential characteristics of its limestone and clay soils. A masterful balance of richness and freshness is achieved through judiciously controlled, traditional winemaking methods. The Jessica Litaud Macon Fuisse 2022 is an elegant offering with a vibrant golden hue, opening up a palate of ripe orchard fruits, honeyed melon, and a sprinkling of toasted hazelnuts. The finish, encapsulating undertones of citrus and stone fruit, leaves a lingering minerality, emblematic of its place of production. This is a wine that brings the artistry of Burgundian winemaking to your glass and captivates the senses, sip after exquisite sip. |
