Wine Spectator (97)

Rustic and well-structured, offering an attractive mix of mature spice box, leather and forest floor notes, with a concentrated core of wild cherry and gamy blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, featuring a long, chewy finish of coffee and iron. Non-blind Emidio Pepe vertical (May 2013). Best from 2015 through 2030. 4,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

Vinous (88)

Bright red-ruby. Initially a bit funky and gamey on the nose, then clears up with aeration to offer aromas of dark berries, menthol and a hint of tobacco. Soft and plush but not at all overripe, with sweet dark berry and cocoa flavors offering considerable immediate appeal. Finishes with building tannins and good length. Fruitier and more forward than usual for a young wine from Emidio Pepe (in my experience, these reds improve spectacularly with bottle age, showing their best at 8 to 10 years from the vintage) and atypically dominated by black rather than red fruit notes, this also strikes me as less deep than most other past great vintages of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from this estate.

Vinous (95+)

The 2015 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne opens slowly in the glass. Coaxing reveals an elegant mix of fresh mint, red currant, roses and a dusting of spice. It washes across the palate with beautiful finesse, lifted and fresh, showing no sign of its warm vintage origins. Sour cherry and hints of strawberry give way to a delicate web of fine tannin. The 2015 finishes with pretty licorice and pomegranate nuances, leaving behind a lightly structured sensation. What a pretty expression of Pepe Montepulciano, one that grows in volume the longer it spends in the glass. I foresee very good things here. Of note, the Pepe family was so happy with the balance of the 2015 that they decided to hold back 80% of the production for late release.

Vinous (95)

The most inviting mix of lemon oils, musky pear and peach, raw almond, ginger, iodine and yellow flowers wafts up from the 2019 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne. It’s pliant, yet almost buoyant, seeming to hover across the palate with notes of apricot and salty mineral tones that are nicely offset by a pretty inner sweetness. The 2019 becomes perfumed throughout the saline-tinged finale, as inner florals slowly taper off. There’s a density and balance here that should unfold beautifully over the course of the next decade.

Luca Maroni (99)

Ruby red with garnet highlights, intense and persistent fragrance; the bouquet is intense, fruity and persistent, with notes of dried flowers, spice, liquorice and maraschino cherries. The palate is stylish and velvety; almost creamy, with compact tannic structure that balances nicely with the alcohol. Great structure, complex, elegant and well-balanced with a long finish. Opulent fruit. Ideal for roasts, game, strongly flavoured dishes and mature cheese. Thoughtful wine.

Vinous (94+)

Deep ruby. Initially reticent aromas open slowly with aeration and a hint at dark red cherry, blueberry, underbrush, plus a perfumed violet topnote. Bright, juicy and suave, with a seamless quality to the tannins that provide backbone to the ripe blue and black fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes long and very pure, with a charming, easy to drink quality, though this will repay cellaring. A suave, silky wine that boasts the most refined tannins of any wine I tasted from Abruzzo this year, but it’s neither the most complex nor most concentrated Montepulciano d’Abruzzo this venerable estate has ever made. That said, it’s magical texture is one you won’t soon forget. The first Montepulciano d’Abruzzo released by Valentini since the very great 2006; the six year wait was worth it!.
