In Tuscany, famous vineyards like Antinori, Marchesi di Frescobaldi, and Tenuta San Guido have become synonymous with excellence. The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. Vinous (91)

Good deep red. Highly complex aromas of crystallized red berries, black raspberry, dried flowers and pungent spices. Thick, sweet and strong in extract; has a dusty, tactile quality and freakish concentration for the vintage. Smooth and soft despite possessing good acidity. Finishes with round tannins and excellent persistence. This is fairly accessible already.

Indulge in the exceptional Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1995, an embodiment of superb Italian winemaking legacy. Born in the hills of Valpolicella, Italy's Veneto region, this prodigious vinous potion sweeps you off your feet with its potent charisma and unassailable quality. Bertani's commitment to traditional viticulture practices is testament to the wine's magnificent structure. The selected grapes undergo a meticulous drying process for approximately 120 days, intensifying the fruit's inherent flavours and sugar content. Finally, they age gracefully within the confines of Slavonian oak barrels for a remarkable six years prior to bottling. The resultant wine is rich, full-bodied, bearing dark fruit profiles intertwined with remnants of milk chocolate and dried fig nuances. Enjoy Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 1995, an impressive memento of a superb vintage year and a genuine masterpiece by Bertani – one of Italy's most respected vineyards since 1857.

Vinous (84)

Darker in color, with more evidence of ruby than the regular Brunello bottling, but still only moderately saturated. Shows some sweetness from the oak on the nose but also a pronounced cassis note that is distinctly not varietal. Round and reasonably soft in the mouth, with moderate concentration. This offers a more harmonious acidity than the above, as well as a degree of elegance, but not the weight or force of a Brunello from a superior vineyard. In a vintage like 1995, I expected more from a house that has been making very good wine in Montalcino since the 1970s.

Vinous (92)

The 1995 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with hints of smoke, scorched earth, licorice and tobacco. Here, too, the aromas are more forward than the fruit, which remains big, powerful and virile. The tannins are quite firm, and the wine remains young, even after all these years. A huge, intense finish rounds things out. Today the 1995 comes across as a bit awkward. It should be a little more composed in another 2-3 years.

Vinous (95+)

The 1995 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento (magnum) is a gorgeous, vivid wine loaded with class and personality. Black cherries, smoke, tobacco, licorice, flowers and menthol explode from the glass as this multi-dimensional wine shows off its considerable class and pedigree. Layers of flavor continue to build in the glass over time. A cool streak of minerality frames the inward, mysterious finish. In magnum, the 1995 is truly spectacular. The October 9 harvest remains the latest recorded for Poggio al Vento.

Vinous (88-90)

Medium color. Fruit driven aromas of plum, raspberry, licorice, pepper, mint and earth. Tight and high pitched; primary and backward, with moderate ripeness. Seems rather high in acidity.

Jancis Robinson (18)

Very dark healthy shaded crimson. Intense, ripe but subtle – very interesting! Rather like ashes on the palate – a big bruiser with something in common with the 1985 but made much more gently. Definitely sweet. 13.5% CS:M:CF 76:18:6 218,000 bottles

Wine Advocate (91)

The 1995 Bolgheri Sassicaia still holds court, thank you very much. It reminds me of a grande dame, or a woman of influence and sophistication who lights up the room thanks to her expertly delivered, albeit antiquated charm. The wine's aged evolution is evident as the bouquet releases sure aromas of dried fruit, old spice, saffron and cola. I can't say the aromas reach perfect equilibrium, because they don't. There is a muddled fruit note in there too that subtracts from its purity. The mouthfeel is svelte and lean with finely polished and silky tannins. In fact, the wine's texture shows precision and elegance. Pretty menthol notes appear on the long finish.

The 1995 Solaia is simply magnificent. Here it is the wine's combination of richness and vibrancy that impresses. The 1995 is a wine of total balance, harmony and class. What a great showing.
