Wine Advocate (93)The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins. In fact, this was the second of nine wines served in a flight that started with the lightest Riservas and ended with the most powerful wines. |

Wine Advocate (93)This is the first wine served in a flight of nine that increase in intensity and power moving forward. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pora opens to a medium-light color with garnet highlights. Aromas include wild cherry, cassis and blue flower. You also get hints of crushed limestone. The Pora vineyard is near the Tanaro River Valley, where warm air accumulates, and the vines are planted in fertile soils. The extra heat and humidity of the area makes for accessible wines that are ready to drink and are less complex overall. |

Wine Advocate (94)The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes from an area that is further removed from the Tanaro River and has southwestern exposures. It shows a typical profile for Nebbiolo with rich fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and textural volume that is delivered with ample blackberry, blackcurrant and spice. The character of this wine is generous and rich. There is plenty of meat on these bones. |

Wine Advocate (93)This is the bread-and-butter Barolo from Ratti, with 70,000 bottles produced. Fruit is sourced from over 15 hectares of vine planted on characteristic blue marl soils. The 2020 Barolo Marcenasco is an international classic, and I have had the fortune of following this wine over 20-plus vintages. I always like the unassuming personality of Marcenasco. It gives you character but never stretches too far in any one stylistic direction. This vintage shows some sweet oak and cinnamon, but you also get plenty of bright fruit. You could fault it for a little too much oak, which appears with more strength in 2020. |

Vinous (92)Bright red. Enticing aromas of violet, licorice and minerals. Fresh and juicy; saline, licorice and dark plum flavors are lifted by vibrant acidity. Finishes savory and long, with an enticing glyceral, fleshy quality. Aged about two years in large 20- to 45-hL Slavonian oak barrels and 500-liter tonneaux and is made with a 75%/25% blend of grapes from the vineyards in Romitorio and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, respectively. |

Wine Advocate (99)This wine blew me away and remains one of my favorites in this report. The organic San Giusto a Rentennano 2021 Percarlo is all Sangiovese and represents excellent work by detail-minded vintner Luca Martini di Cigala. It shows delightful intensity and richness backed by chiseled fruit and lifted aromas of blackcurrant, spice, tar, earth and violet. There is power here, but the wine is also delicate. I love the determination of this vintage. Percarlo plays beautifully on the nose and over the palate with freshness, chalky tannins and lingering fruit. There's nothing heavy about it. It ages in 500-liter and 30-hectoliter oak casks for 22 months. Production is 18,528 bottles. |

Wine Advocate (96)The Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, from a 2.5-hectare site in Castiglione Falletto on a southwest-facing slope, shows an especially rich and textured side with aromas of dark fruit that are accented by clove, cinnamon, spice and even a hint of bitter chocolate. This is a bold expression of Nebbiolo with elegantly managed tannins that are quite firm and need ample time to resolve. Production is 12,100 bottles. |

Vinous (94)Luminous straw-yellow. Tangy aromas of nectarine, pineapple, apple, minty herbs and lime, complicated by a bright mineral undertone. Very precise, vibrant and dense, offering floral, captivating flavors of white stone fruit, pineapple, crushed rock and spice. The compelling fruity acidity frames and carries the extremely lifted and complex flavors through the very long finish, which features lingering notes of lemon verbena, jasmine and minerals. Along with the great 2010, this is the best Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from Valentini since his also outstanding 2008. |
