The Bâtard Montrachet vineyard lies just below and parallel to Le Montrachet across the breadth of the slope. The largest of the five Grands Crus, its 11.7 hectares are divided between Puligny with 6 hectares and Chassagne with 5.7 hectares.
Bâtard Montrachet is generally ranked third in stature among these Grands Crus; its ownership is extremely piecemeal, the largest holding totalling 1.9 hectares.
Maison Louis Jadot carries out a traditional vinification in primarily new oak casks, to underscore and highlight the qualities of this great wine. Slightly fuller in body, with somewhat less finesse, fragrance and finish than Le Montrachet. With age, it shows a sumptuous richness and complex palate of luscious fruit flavours, with distinct toasty nuances in the bouquet and finish.
The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a more nuanced and mineral-driven bouquet compared to the Bienvenues. It unfurls with green apple and dewy meadow scents, displaying fine definition. The well-balanced palate is quite spicy and vibrant, delivering a fine bead of acidity and more penetration than the Bienvenues on the finish. There is a captivating spicy aftertaste, too. Give this 4 to 5 years in bottle.

Cask sample. Very rich and concentrated on the nose. Big and muscular at first but actually with real tautness and acidity on the end – almost unexpectedly! Not the most thrilling example from this appellation I have been lucky enough to taste but it’s certainly an attempt to give it tension. Almost too much so!
