Raised in the Napa County city of St.Helena, proprietor and eponymous founder Mark Aubert is, like more than a few of the world’s great vignerons, a person with farming and terroir in his blood. The son of fruit farmers, Aubert’s sole foray out of his native Napa was to university, upon completion of which he eagerly returned to commence what has been an extraordinary life in wine. Having spent a fruitful career as winemaker at the famous Colgin Cellars as well as consulting for Sloan, FUTO and Bryant Family, Mark and his wife Teresa Aubert founded their namesake winery officially in 1999, releasing their first vintage in 2000.
In the handful of years through which they have been operating, the husband and wife team have crafted what are, quite simply, some of the finest Chardonnays ever made in Napa – no small claim by any means. A swathe of perfect 100 point scores from the world’s leading critics tell only part of the story – it is the striking depth, power and purity which have astonished oenophiles over the past vintages.
Wine Advocate (97-99)One of the last vineyards picked, this section of Hyde vineyard in Carneros is planted to Corton Charlemagne clone on St. George rootstock. The 2018 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons leaps from the glass with vivacious fresh grapefruit, lemon peel, orange blossoms and lime cordial notes with nuances of fresh ginger, hay, sea spray and chalk dust. The full-bodied mouth explodes with the whole citrus-fruit flavor spectrum—lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit on steroids—complemented by loads of spicy sparks and lifted by amazing freshness, sporting a provocatively creamy texture and finishing long.
Wine Advocate (98-100)Mark Aubert notes that this is a complex vineyard. It is planted to four different clones: two Old Wente clones, Mount Eden and Corton Charlemagne. The 2018 Chardonnay Lauren Estate explodes effortlessly from the glass, emitting flamboyant crystalized ginger, cinnamon stick, green tea and lime cordial notions with suggestions of applesauce, lemongrass, honey-roasted almonds and paraffin wax plus a touch of cedar chest. Full-bodied, the palate is wonderfully earthy/savory, delivering a beautiful oiliness to the texture juxtaposed by spine-tingling purity and freshness, finishing with epic length.
