For over a century, Domaine Bonneau du Martray has chosen to focus on only the Corton Hill and produces nothing but Corton and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Crus. To date, it is reportedly the only estate in Burgundy with a Grand Cru-only portfolio.
With such a niche focus, Domaine Bonneau du Martray caught the attention of Stan Kroenke, owner of Screaming Eagle, who acquired a majority stake in the estate in 2017. Just a year later, in a bid to further improve the quality of its wines by focusing on smaller acreage, Domaine Bonneau du Martray leased around 2.9 hectares of its Chardonnay vines to the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, further testament to the pedigree of its vines and commitment towards continuous improvement.

Vinous (95)I thought the 2009 Corton-Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray was simply brilliant. Perhaps it was the magnum format, but the 2009 was fabulous, with all of the signature mineral, slate and citrus notes given a little extra richness by the warmth of the year. What a gorgeous wine. |

Vinous (94)The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is just starting to drink well. Fresh and mineral, the 2011 also looks to have plenty of life ahead of it. Chalk, lemon confit and white flowers all grace this open-knit, curvy Charlemagne. The 2011 has really softened in recent years. Time in the glass brings out the layers in this very pretty and expressive Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray. |

Burghound (94)There is a hint of exoticism to the cool and admirably pure citrus, pear and green apple suffused nose that is presently trimmed in a noticeable, if very slight, touch of reduction. The rich and extremely fresh middle weight plus flavors possess an impressive amount of dry extract as well as ample mineral influence on the austere and ultra-pure finish that seems to go on and on. This powerful and impeccably well-balanced effort is still very much on the way up and will need another 5 to 7 years before it reaches its full apogee. Tasted twice recently with consistent notes. |
