    Bouchard Père & Fils

Founded in 1731, Bouchard is one of the most long-standing and important producers in Burgundy. Since their founding, they have been assembling a collection of some of the best Cote d'Or vineyards, including 12 Grand Crus and no less than 74 1er Crus.

With more prestige and history than most, Vinous's Neal Martin has praised them in the past because their wines are "well priced compared to others". As a grower, producer and negociant, it is undeniable that Bouchard Père et Fils has played a significant role in the history of Burgundy but they have now shed their negociant tag as their new owner Artémis Domaines, who also own the likes of Château Latour and now Eisele Vineyard in Napa, have a policy of wishing only to make wines from vineyards which they own.

(bottled in February of 2017): Deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of kirsch, leather, coffee and chocolate; as at so many other addresses, this first sample tasted after Bouchard's range of 2016s struck me as somewhat roasted in its fruit character. Very rich yet sappy, showing the solidity of a very warm year; quite large-scaled (14% alcohol!) for this cuvée, offering highly concentrated flavors of red berries, dark cherry and chocolate. A rather extreme style yet nicely aromatic in the middle palate (Bouchard tries to keep this wine open for restaurants, noted Weber). Finishes with soft tannins and very good length.

Bright, dark red. Ripe aromas of dark berries, plum and licorice. Supple and broad on entry, then quite dry in the middle, offering redcurrant and plum fruit flavors joined by a complicating spicy quality on the back end. The chewy tannins are going to require patience. The yield here was just 12 hectoliters per hectare, "my smallest ever for this cuvée," according to Weber.

Like the Savigny Lavières, Clos de la Mousse is another spot with cooler clays. Very dense purple. Some plums on the nose, a little rounder, with good acidity behind, more red fruit notes emerge beneath. This shows considerable promise. Tasted: November 2021

The 2021 Beaune Clos de la Mousse 1er Cru comes from vines on a flat, dense clay soil, that are among the last to be picked. The wine has plenty of dark berry, cold black tea and light sea spray scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, plush tannins that lend this rondeur, harmonious with a sweet, almost candied finish. This will be more approachable than the Les Teurons, though it does not possess the same complexity.

The Cistercians planted white grape vines here as far back as the 13th century, and curiously, they planted Pinot Noir all around it. As usual, it seems they knew what they were doing as this wine is always a delight. It's unusually deeply colored – almost golden, especially for a Beaune, yet it is vibrantly elegant with tingly acidity and delicate aromas. Tasting of Granny Smith apple and star fruit with a dollop of fresh cream, this turns lightly salty on the solid finish. 2022-27

Good medium red. Bright aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackberry. Sweet and plump but pure and fresh, with the blackberry flavor dominating. Has the fruit to support the firm acidity. Finishes with very fine tannins and good persistence.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus offers up pretty aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet loamy soil, truffles and grilled game bird. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, with a succulent core of fleshy fruit and a rich and textural profile. It's a giving, generous wine that should offer a broad drinking window, but don't let its early approachability deceive, as it should be long-lived too.

Bouchard Père's historic 4ha parcel at the centre of this excellent premier cru is the 'filet mignon' of Grèves, according to Frédéric Weber. Owned by the négociant since 1791, this is an intense, aromatic, engagingly floral Pinot Noir with 15% stems and 30% new wood and good support from tannins and balancing acidity.

Bouchard's evocatively named parcel is a monopoly holding that covers 3.9ha on sand and gravel soils in the heart of Beaune Grèves. Picked early but still pretty ripe, this has tobacco pouch and clove aromas from 20% whole bunches, layers of mulberry and raspberry fruit, aromatic 20% new wood and a backdrop of sinewy, granular tannins.

From Jeroboam. Bouchard purchased the site in 1791 and now hold 3.92ha. Fred Weber describes the vineyard as the 'fillet mignon' within Beaune-Grèves. Not surprisingly given the age/bottle size, primary characters are very dominant but there is clearly massive potential here. As the wine breathes, lovely aromas of raspberry/blackberry and violets evolve. Rich, ripe, pure dark fruit on the palate, subtle oak, mouthfilling and concentrated, with silky tannin and vibrant acidity providing the structure for long-term ageing. A great vintage and a great Beaune Premier Cru.

Bouchard has nearly four hectares of this, perhaps the greatest site in the Beaune appellation. On a modest slope with east-southeast exposure in the heart of the terroir, this has produced a sophisticated, elegant wine in 2020, fermenting out to barely 13.5% alcohol with a pH between 3.5–3.6. The fruit is supremely luxurious and lush, yet underscored with plenty of nuance of spice, smoke, earth, and leather. The texture is dense and powerful yet superbly elegant — a triumph.

Medium deep purple. A little oak almost masking the slight reduction. Clears up and integrates, bringing a darker raspberry fruit. A certain sucrosity on the palate followed by the typical firm tannins which make this wine a vin de garde in most vintages. This is really quite backward and should keep well. Drink from 2027-2033

The 2020 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has the finest aromatics of Bouchard Père’s Meursault with delineated, very focused citrus fruit, walnut and light white flower scents. The palate is very well balanced with a fine acidic spice, a clever touch of reduction with very good persistence on the finish. Bon vin.

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is excellent, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, beeswax, wet stones and dried white flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with an elegantly satiny attack, a tangy line of acidity and a tight-knit, concentrated core, concluding with a beautifully delineated finish. This is a racy, acid-driven Genevrières that will evolve beautifully in the cellar. Bouchard's holdings in Genevrières amount to some 15% of the appellation, so it's reassuring to see that they are in good hands.

Offering up notes of pear, white flowers, toasted almonds and beeswax, Bouchard's 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, with a more tightly wound, introverted profile than the Charmes that preceded it. Built to age, this is a serious Genevrières that I look forward to tasting from bottle.

The 2 hectares 65 - with one parcel mid-slope and one further up - of this Premier Cru are always the first that Fr d ric harvests in Meursault. This is a delightful Genevri res, resplendent in floral aromas. The palate shows chamomile, vanilla extract, wild flower honey, pluots and green gauges. The mid-palate has a welcoming sappiness elevated by prancing acidity. 2022-30

(5 Star Wine) The plot by the road is their first Meursault to pick. Half and half from their two plots, as there is much being replanting in the lower plot. Fine pale to mid lemon. Super refined complex bouquet. This beautifully refined quality continues on the palate, a little sandalwood note, a suggestion of verbena along with the golden yet fresh fruit. Nuances throughout but still with a refined generosity of flesh. The Bouchard Père & Fils Genevrières stands out this year! Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023.

The 2018 Meursault Les Gouttes d’Or 1er Cru comes from 0.60 hectares of vine, one of the last to be picked. It has a finely tuned bouquet of fresh pear, walnut and orange zest aromas that are commendably detailed. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and nicely focused, revealing pretty apricot and white peach notes toward a finish that is surfeit with comeliness, though less in the way of mineralité.

The 2020 Meursault Les Gouttes d’Or 1er Cru has a more complex bouquet than the Bouchères with lanolin, dried honey and hazelnut aromas that unfold in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a zest opening: pink grapefruit, orange zest and a touch of spice, this has good weight on the finish. Fine.

The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières is very promising, delivering notes of citrus oil, white flowers, mandarin, fresh bread and struck match. Medium to full-bodied, racy and chiseled, it's bright and mineral, with a tight, tangy profile that's defined by the site more than the vintage.

Two parcels – one in the upper reaches that gives lemon zest aromatics and one in the bottom in the old quarry that contributes saltiness – combine into a generous, one-hectare holding. Complexity looms on the nose and a similar, sultry concentration follows on the palate. The whole, resolutely suave package is lifted by buoyant acidity. It is very "digestible", as the Bourguignons would say. Baked apples, plentiful sweet spice and bread crust linger on the finish. 2023-35

The 2019 Monthélie Clos Les Champs Fulliot 1er Cru comes from 0.9 hectares of vine. It was the second parcel to be picked because of its warm microclimate, yet I find more precision on the Les Duresses. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of dark chocolate and tar. There is more elegance and terroir expression on the Les Duresses this year.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a succinct nose, the 50% whole bunches are neatly embroidered into the red berry fruit, with touches of iodine developing over time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious, velvety smooth with deftly integrated oak towards the surprisingly concentrated, blueberry-tinged finish. One of the pleasant surprises from Bouchard Père this vintage.

Absolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time! Tasted: November 2021
