Devil Proof
About Devil Proof
Named by both Forbes and Wine and Spirits magazines as one of the “30 under 30” brightest stars on the culinary and beverage scene, Jesse Katz had amassed a wealth of winemaking experience by his mid-20s, including being an assistant winemaker at the legendary Screaming Eagle. Since 2015, Jesse has been dedicating his effort to Devil Proof, a label inspired by one of the trips to Cuba with his father, Andy Katz.
To offer everyone a chance to “Devil-proof” themselves, Jesse crafts these amazing Malbecs – a highly unusual choice of grapes for Sonoma County, which is usually known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But then again, Jesse is not in the business of crafting “usual” wines! Consistently scoring big Parker points, Jesse’s wines have gained cult-like status over the years.

Wine Advocate (92-94)This may be the finest Malbec I have ever tasted from California. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a beautiful nose of blackberry and blueberry fruit intermixed with spring flowers and licorice. There is gorgeous sucrosity and fruit in this killer Malbec, which could easily rival the best from high elevation vineyards in Argentina. It should drink well for 6-10 years. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Slightly deeper and richer, with more blackcurrant fruits as well as tobacco, lead pencil, spice box, graphite, and dried flower-like nuances, the 2018 Malbec Farrow Ranch is a beauty, hitting the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional texture, building tannins, and a stunning finish that carries remarkable minerality as well as freshness. Malbec doesn't get any better, and this magical wine will evolve for 20 years or more. It’s the finest Malbec I’ve ever tasted and hats off to winemaker Jesse Katz. |

Jeb Dunnuck (98)All Malbec from a great appellation in the heart of Sonoma, the 2018 Malbec Rockpile Ridge offers a classic, exotic, blue fruit-driven style with a wealth of blueberries, wildflowers, iron, tobacco, and crushed stone. Flawlessly balanced and full-bodied on the palate, it has an awesome mid-palate, a vibrant sense of freshness and acidity, and a killer finish. It's one of the finest Malbecs out there, yet it’s slightly closed and backward and needs 4-5 years of bottle age. It should have two decades of overall longevity. |
