De Montille
Domaine de Montille in the Cote de Beaune was developed by Hubert de Montille in 1951. His family have aristocratic roots in the region’s land since the 17th century. Now run by his son, Etienne, they use traditional wine making techniques to produce pure elegant Burgundy that generally requires five years bottle ageing.

Vinous (94-97)(100% vendange entier; 60% new oak): Bright dark red. Knockout discreet nose combines raspberry, Oriental spices, rose petal and flinty minerality. Extremely intense in the mouth, with its youthfully imploded flavors of raspberry and saline minerality conveying outstanding definition and energy. The longest of these 2015s so far, finishing with noble building tannins and lovely red berry, spice and crushed-stone perfume. This wine struck me as higher-pitched and redder in its fruit character than the 2014 version at the same stage. Sieve noted that the estate's highest 18 rows of vines on hard limestone give this wine an edginess that's not found in the Christiane cuvée. |

Vinous (93-96)(vinified with two-thirds whole clusters and aged in 60% new oak; no frost damage here but the yield was just under 40 hectoliters per hectare): Healthy dark red. Explosive aromas of black raspberry, cocoa powder and espresso. Wonderfully sweet and savory, offering very intense yet silky flavors of black raspberry and minerals framed by harmonious acidity. Really outstanding inner-mouth energy and definition here! The resounding finish features firm, chalky tannins and terrific length and lift. This wine comes from vines at the top of this premier cru on hard limestone. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster and is matured in 50% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and pressed rose petal scents, plus just a hint of black truffle in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A gentle, lilting Les Malconsorts with a pliant, lightly spiced finish. Maybe other vintages have displayed a little more density on the finish, but this remains a lovely premier cru. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and includes young vines. It has a very intense bouquet of red and blue fruit infused with rose petal and violet, touches of clove and blood orange developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit on the entry, quite detailed and structured, and blueberry and blackberry toward the finish. It needs to finish its élevage to fully cohere. Very fine persistence on the aftertaste. Excellent. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)(100% vendange entier; 40% new oak): Good deep red. Much more backward and medicinal on the nose than the regular Malconsorts, offering scents of menthol, mint, licorice, violet and black pepper lifted by a piquant whiff of orange peel. Then brooding and dominated by its structure in the mouth, offer blueberry and blackberry flavors lifted by blood orange. Terrific cut and energy here, and even suaver than the previous wine. Finishes very spicy and impressively long, with serious fine-grained tannins starting drier than those of the Malconsorts but gaining sweetness as the wine opens in the glass. Both this wine and the first Malconsorts got a cold soak that lasted for five days. They were harvested on the same day, vinified entirely with their stems, and aged in the same percentage of new oak. The only difference is the location of the vines: The Cristiane comes from an enclave that on the map appears to be more La Tache than Malconsorts. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains a little more new oak than the regular cuvée, though it is also 100% whole cluster fruit. It has a supremely well defined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone and wet limestone aromas that seem to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, impressive depth, silky and smooth in texture with a light spiced and intense finish that lingers in the mouth. This is an exceptionally fine Cuvée Christian that should offer 20 to 30 years of pleasure. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster but a little more new oak than the regular cuvée (as a reminder, it comes from the parcel that lies adjacent to La Tâche). It has a little more definition and darker fruit on the nose, developing more floral scents with aeration. This is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, focused and harmonious, with gentle grip toward the chalky-textured finish. It will require several years in bottle. |

Vinous (95-97)The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is 80% whole cluster, very different in aromatic profile to the regular cuvée, more ferrous with hints of red pepper infusing the red and black fruit. The palate is very well-defined and comparing side-by-side, this conveys more energy and tension than the regular cuvée, almost with greater precision towards the finish. Very long and tender, this is a marvellous Vosne-Romanée for long-term ageing. Closure: Diam |
