    Faiveley

The historic Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's leading domaines. There is no doubt that in the last decade, under the guidance of Erwan Faiveley and winemaker Jérôme Flous, they have undergone a renaissance of style, shedding their old-school, austere reds for elegant, beautifully finessed wines.

Domaine Faiveley owns holdings in many of Burgundy’s most revered vineyards in the Côte de Nuits (Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, etc.) and in the Côte de Beaune (Corton-Charlemagne, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard, etc.) with some of these being monopoles under single ownership.

Although armed with an incredible variety of vineyards, Faiveley also have their extraordinary heritage and experience as an advantage over their local rivals. No less than seven generations of Faiveleys have succeeded each other in running the domaine since it was founded in 1825.

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more backward and surly than the Bienvenues at this stage, less "welcoming". The palate is well balanced with a tangy entry, orange rind and lemon peel, touches of grapefruit towards the finish, though the Bienvenues has more cohesion. Still commendable given the season.

Woo wee! There are lots of spicy top notes, even barbecue spices, and aged meats on this nose. Sweet and crunchy red fruits press into the palate along with smoky oak, forest floor and pencil lead. The fine tannins sit primly on the palate while the reverberating acidity supports the medium body. This is immediately enticing but deserves time in bottle. 2025-45

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru bides its time opening up, revealing raspberry and cranberry fruit, autumn leaves, touches of orange pith. Cohesive and focused, it gains vigour in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brown spices and white pepper that are liberally sprinkled over the finish that has a very small attenuation. But this is still well-crafted.

Mid crimson. Open and scented with vanilla-laced dark-red fruits. Firm, almost chewy on the palate. Like all these Faiveley grands crus, the oak is not hidden but is swallowed by pure fruit, perfectly ripe but not overripe and with that wonderful character of purity without excess sweetness. Excellent balance between ripeness and freshness. Chewy, structured finish. Coming back to this wine after it has been open longer, there’s a floral note that is easy to miss and adds to the incipient complexity.

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very delineated, quite floral bouquet with rose petal infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. There is a touch of sous-bois that become accentuated with time. The palate is fleshy and almost confit-like on the entry, but the acidity keeps this on an even keel. Plush, luxuriant...almost sexy (I dislike the word apropos Burgundy) but there is something very sensual about this wine. Very long in terms of length. Superb.

The 2020 Echézeaux En Orveau Grand Cru (the lieu-dit has been stated on the label since 2018) has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with dark cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, the marl terroir coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the 20% whole bunch imparting a pleasing peppery note and energy on the finish. This should age with style.

    Decanter (96)

The wine has an inky dark colour and pronounced aromas of blackberry, fig, smoke and spice. The texture is lush, yet there are firm tannins and the wine never seems overbearing or aggressive - everything is kept in elegant balance. Faiveley is the proprietor of three parcels that total 1.27ha in the Clos de Vougeot, including a portion in Grand Maupertuis and two parcels nearer the bottom. The fruit was picked very ripe (14.5%) and partially destemmed before fermentation, with a very careful extraction and ageing in cask (half new).

Barrel sample. Mid crimson, a little lighter in colour than the Grands Échezeaux. Brighter fruited and a little more floral, with a stony/mineral elegance as well as that pure and perfumed dark-red fruit. A youthful beauty.

The grapes are vinified partly as whole clusters and punched down each day before ageing for 18 months in cask (half new). Despite the fairly aggressive vinification, the wine has an enchantingly lovely, forward fruit character and a delightful, silky approachability. From my experience, this will continue to improve for decades. The Clos des Cortons Faiveley has been a monopole of the house since 1874. They have 2.77ha planted to Pinot Noir here, north of Renardes in this distinctly separate climat of the lieu-dit Le Rognet.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was heavily affected by the frost resulting in just four barrels rather than the usual 16 or 17; their plot is located on the Ladoix side. At the moment there is quite a bit of reduction on the nose that occludes the terroir expression at the moment. The palate is taut and fresh, a judicious slice of bitter lemon lends tension that sutures with the apricot and lemongrass notes on the finish that has a little more persistence than the Bâtard-Montrachet. Promising despite everything.

This comes from three parts in Lavaux that in total average about 45 years old. It sports delightful freshness with mulberry highlights and a minerally background. The palate is rich in fruit yet very mid-weight thanks to singing acidity and fluid, drizzle soft tannins. This is an unusually accessible Lavaux. 2023-34

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers one of my favourite bouquets from Faiveley in this vintage: open redcurrant and wild strawberry scents, touches of sous-bois and truffle, very expressive and charming. The palate is well balanced with finely-chiselled tannins, quite energetic, perhaps because compared to their Les Cazetiers, this was barely touched by the frost. Almost confit-like on the finish. Excellent.

There is better layering and much more sauvage character present on the smoky nose of wild dark currant, game and a whiff of herbal tea. The medium weight plus flavors possess a beguiling texture along with a pronounced minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately austere finale that displays notably better depth and persistence. Very good quality here.

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a delightful, well-defined bouquet with pure dark berry fruit, just a touch of reduction, yet you can tell the caliber behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with a harmonious, creamy-textured opening, well judged acidity, very good Clos-de-Bèze spine with a sapid finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
