    Fourrier

    This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy.     The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a decadent bouquet of red cherry and cranberry aromas, touches of pain d’épices and a hint of menthol emerging with time. But somehow it manages to retain control. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, slightly chalky tannins, good depth and a gentle grip toward the focused finish. This should age extremely well.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96)

    Medium deep crimson purple. A very floral bouquet, on first impression perhaps this Clos St-Jacques could use more precision. Sensual and succulent, dark raspberry and blackberry, the suggestion of stems (were some added back in?) add a little structure which is probably necessary as the tannins and acidity are not otherwise pronounced. Still a wine which will give great pleasure. Now I can find the precision at the back, allied to the charm. Drink from 2028.

    The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru has a very ripe bouquet that flirts with sur-maturité; hints of dates and fig can be glimpsed among the blue and red fruit. I would like to see more composure here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, a little heady in style but retaining decent balance and freshness toward the finish. Not bad, although I have tasted better vintages in the past.

    The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has an outstanding bouquet of crushed iris and incense aromas filtering through mineral-rich black fruit. Such vibrancy! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good acidity and a wonderfully focused finish that is top-drawer. Superb.
