    Fourrier

    This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy.     The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a winsome bouquet, very pure and quite floral with vivid red cherries and red plummy fruit laced with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and silky smooth with a precise finish. Elegant and suave, this will be a very delicious Chambolle-Musigny.

    The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very precise bouquet, taut and fresh, wonderfully focused with black cherries, crushed strawberry and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth texture, filigree tannins that frame the slightly confit-like black fruit, leading to a slightly candied finish. This CSJ will need several years to really meld together in bottle.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

    (5-Star wine) A rich even purple colour. The bouquet is very classy, in a restrained but refined manner suggesting more opulence to come. Just a touch of pepper. Dark raspberry, complex, juicy, structured, it is all there with a persistence that outstrips the other Gevrey 1ers crus tasted to date.

    The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Cherbaudes 1er Cru has an almost Morey-like personality on the nose: dark berry fruit, granitic scents, touches of forest floor and wild mushroom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, clean and crisp, not a powerful Gevrey-Chambertin, but precise and quite pixelated towards the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle.

    The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes offers a mixture of red and black fruit laced with blood orange and quince, nicely focused with a sense of energy developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. Fine acidity, just slightly confit-like towards the finish that erodes a little of the precision compared to other cuvées, though there is satisfying length.

    The 2020 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose, a mixture of black cherry and blueberry fruit, pressed violets and veins of blood orange. The palate already conveys a sense of energy, sorbet-fresh red fruit laced with dessicated orange peel, touches of stem ginger emerging towards the spicy finish. Very impressive length. This is excellent.
