Emmanuel Rouget
Emmanuel Rouget is a nephew of Burgundy legend Henri Jayer, his mentorship passed on a infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of winemaking. He has stayed true to many of Henri’s preferences such as a focus of ultra low yields and maturing the major wines in 100% new oak barrels. His wines are much sought after.

Vinous (92-94)The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a "big", quite ostentatious bouquet with dark cherries, crème de cassis, tinned prune and blueberries. It augurs for a top-heavy palate, though actually I find this better balanced than expected, certainly more so than the Les Beaumonts with veins of blood orange enlivening the quite persistent finish. This should age well in bottle although I would like to see more restraint on the nose. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Village comes from Rouget’s four parcels in the north of the appellation. This has a pastille-like purity on the nose, dark cherries comingling with violet and light peony scents. The palate is well defined, quite structure, a little savory in style with black pepper on the structured finish. Afford this four or five years in bottle. |

Vinous (86-88)The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village had a bit too much VA on the nose for me and rather smudged the definition, the cassis and black cherry fruit. The palate was likewise a little too candied and rich, the Les Lavières that followed showing much more precision and terroir expression. A quasi-Syrah-like finish. I admit to being flummoxed by this cuvée from barrel. |

Vinous (96-98)The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux 1er Cru, matured in seven new barrels, is beautifully-defined on the nose with precocious, penetrating dark cherry, raspberry and violet aromas that envelop the olfactory senses. The palate is harmonious and intense, silky-smooth in texture with better acidity and tension than some of Rouget's other cuvées. Layers of penetrating, sorbet-fresh red fruit are lavish yet very focused with a long and persistant peacock's tail finish. Wonderful. 14.5% alcohol according to Emmanuel Rouget. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has a quintessential floral bouquet with pressed violet infusing the red fruit, veins of blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with palpable energy. Taut and fresh, this is a Vosne-Romanée Village that displays wonderful focus and might be my pick of Rouget’s wines if price is factored in. Recommended. |
