    Fontodi

    About Fontodi

Fontodi has been in the Manetti family since the 1960's after they grew tired of the role they had held for centuries prior; producing the iconic terracotta tiles which adorn the roofs of wineries and homes throughout Tuscany. Pursuing a policy of meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship, the estate has become one of the most well-known names in Tuscany and for good reason. Producing some of the regions finest examples of Chianti Classico alongside the iconic Super Tuscan, Flaccianello della Pieve, Fontodi is an essential player in Italian wine.

The 2016 Pinot Nero Case Via is fabulous. In fact, the 2016 may very well be the finest edition of Fontodi's Pinot I have ever tasted. A wine of tremendous aromatic intensity, inner sweetness and delineation, the 2016 Pinot simply has it all. Of course, the highly favorable growing season adds quite a bit of pedigree as well. The Fontodi Pinot is not especially varietal, but it is off the charts beautiful and absolutely compelling. It was fermented in terra cotta and aged in French oak, 50% new. What a wine!

The 2018 Pinot Nero Case Via is perfumed, racy expressive, especially on the palate, where the fruit is wonderfully alive. The 2018 was fermented in terra cotta and then aged in a combination of both amphora and oak. I find the tannins a bit edgy and battling the fruit at present. Then again, the 2018 was bottled only recently. I am less sure about the suitability of amphora for Pinot Noir than for other grapes given its inherent fragility. We will see.

The 2019 Pinot Nero Case Via is bold, juicy and super-expressive. Juicy red cherry, plum, spice, rose petal and sweet pipe tobacco are nicely pushed forward. Succulent and inviting, the 2019 has so much to offer.

The 2009 Syrah caresses the palate with generous blueberries, blackberries and French oak. There isn't much varietal character or nuance here, instead the wine impresses for its silky tannins and creamy, expansive finish. Today the 2009 is all about fruit. With time in the glass, some hints of varietal character come through, but this remains a relatively soft, fruit driven vintage for the Syrah. It will be interesting to see if the full range of varietal notes develops.

The 2010 Syrah Case Via is seriously beautiful. An exotic melange of black fruit, smoke, licorice, melted road tar and incense bursts from the glass. The 2010 is rich, full-bodied and impeccable. Stylistically, the wine's volume and shape are closer to those of warm-climate Syrahs. It will be interesting to see if more varietal character develops with time in bottle.

The 1993 Flaccianello della Pieve impresses for its sense of harmony. This is another Flaccianello from a colder year that has held up beautifully. Dark red cherries, crushed flowers, licorice and spices are buffered by vibrant acidity in this attractive, medium-bodied wine. All of the elements are in the right place. I especially like the way the 1993 opens up over time. Energy, class and balance. It's all there in the 1993. The sexiness and silkiness should be on full display for another handful of years.

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

I tasted the 2007 Flaccianello a number of times from barrel and tank before it was bottled. The 2007 is a bold, extroverted Flaccianello that sweeps across the palate with sensual layers of candied cherries, violets, spices and minerals. Dark, mentholated notes develop in the glass, adding further dimensions of inner sweetness, weight and complexity to this Tuscan thoroughbred. While so many 2007s are forward and open, Flaccianello remains muscular, taut and in need of significant cellaring. Still, the round, enveloping finish augurs extremely well for the future. Flaccianello is a selection of the estate's finest Sangiovese and is aged in French oak.

From an iconic vintage that gave generously to all grape varieties across almost all of Tuscany, this wine ranks high on the Fontodi billboard of greatest hits. The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is a rock solid wine that sits firm and begins to peel slowly, each delicate layer at a time. It puts on quite a show with a solid core of dark fruit followed by smoke, spice, tar, licorice and delicate blue flower. On previous tastings of this vintage, I had scored it 97 and 97+ points, respectively. I'm going down one point at this sitting because the wine's fiber has unraveled, ever so slightly, at the edges. It still maintains that solid core, but the wine has taken an important jump forward in its evolution these past three years. Evidently, it is currently in a phase of relaxation and unwinding. Beautifully polished notes of Mediterranean herb and dried mint appear on the long, glossy finish. Giovanni Manetti compares the 2010 vintage to 2006 but considers this vintage slightly more approachable overall.

Manetti calls 2012 'the vintage of two faces': summer was very hot until mid-August, when some rain brought cooler temperatures which slowed down ripening. In chillier zones than Panzano, Sangiovese struggled to ripen, he says. Even more expressive than when it was initially released, the 2012 has a decidedly exotic manner. Saffron, liquorice and cardamom overlay violets and earth. The tannins are polished with an intriguing chalky texture. It's compact and full but balanced, with a core of vibrant acidity and a long explosive finish. This has the bones to age brilliantly.

Fontodi's 2013 Flaccianello della Pieve is a fabulous, riveting wine that grabs hold of all the senses. There is plenty of the richness and textural depth that have always been a Fontodi signature, but in the more contemporary style that seeks to marry power and elegance. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is still very much in its inky, primary stage.

The 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve will probably drink well a bit earlier than the Vigna del Sorbo, as it has more midpalate creaminess, softer contours and a slightly more immediate personality. Even so, the translucent finesse of the vintage is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, chocolate and spice infuses the sweet, creamy finish. The 2014 spent 18 months in oak (less than was once the norm), 80% of it new.

The 2016 Flaccianello della Pieve is off the charts. Fresh, vibrant and explosive, with tremendous overall intensity, the 2016 possesses magnificent richness, with sumptuous fruit purity and simply unreal balance. Creamy, silky tannins add to the wine's sophistication and overall polish. The 2016 is dark, inky and powerful, but not at all heavy. Giovanni Manetti gave the 2016 18 months in French oak (75-80% new), followed by 6 months in cask. This is the first vintage in which a small amount (2%) of the wine was aged in amphora. In a word: stunning! Don't miss it.

The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. The 2018 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stellar wine from Fontodi. It is the richest Flaccianello ever made (in terms of dry extract), with elevated acidity that trails the 2016 by just a touch, but it does not taste like that at all. Dark cherry, violet, lavender, spice, mocha and graphite build with a bit of time in the glass. Like the Sorbo, the 2018 Flaccianello is not a wine of size, as in most previous years, but rather a wine that exudes vibrancy, energy and class from start to finish. I absolutely loved it.
