Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-100)All three cuvées, white soil, red soil and the new plot, have been blended. Overall two-thirds of the blend comes from white soil Bonnes Mares. Two thirds whole bunch, one third new wood. Glowing rich purple, with a beautiful bouquet demonstrating exquisitely balanced fruit. Ripe of course but there are some red threads in with the darker fruit, fine acidity too, just a sumptuous covering of exquisite dark raspberry and a little touch of blackberry. Bravo! There is a lovely covering of flesh on top of natural vivacity.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (97-99)Beginning with the hugely deep but very fresh purple colour, The Roumier 2019 Bonnes Mares shows its majesty from the outset. The nose is backward, but clear and pure. It is much more in pure deep raspberry and less wild on the nose than it can be. Such harmony on the palate, this is exquisite, a very noble Bonnes Mares with optimum purity and one of the most persistent finishes of the year. Brilliant!

Vinous (87)Rather odd aromas of pepper, herbs, asparagus and horseradish. Then full, layered and sweet in the mouth, but with an intrusive vegetal quality hiding the site character. Tannins are nicely ripe. Roumier had to use commercial yeast skins to finish a stuck fermentation. He admits that the yeasts brought a foreign flavor to the wine, and he fined and coarsely filtered it prior to bottling. Still, he believes this Amoureuses will be better for time in bottle. We shall see.

Vinous (94)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a dreamy bouquet that gushes with brambly red berry fruit, redcurrant, cranberry and, to be exact, Tiptree “Little Scarlet” strawberry jam, all beautifully defined. The palate is plush, velvety smooth, very refined with pitch perfect acidity. This Les Cras displays admirable depth, moving into more red Morello cherry and light allspice notes towards the delicate and yet persistent finish. Iron fist/velvety glove and all that... This is a brilliant Chambolle-Musigny from Christophe Roumier and it soared even higher the following day, gaining more nuance and filling out further on the finish.

Vinous (88)Good deep red. Raspberry and underbrush on the nose. Fat, lush, sweet and opulent; chunkier than the Chambolle villages but not roasted. In fact, this big boy has the extract for aging.

Wine Advocate (90-91)Like the rest of the wines here at the time I tasted, Roumier’s 2005 Morey St. Denis Clos de la Bussiere had been sulfured and racked in autumn after a very late malo and was in barrel awaiting imminent assemblage in tank for (unfiltered) bottling. It was slightly reduced but responded well to a good shaking, displaying subtle black fruits, high-toned almond and maraschino, roasted meatiness, resin, and forest floor notes on the nose. It fills the mouth with roasted meat richness, bitter-sweet black fruits, high-toned distilled fruit esters, and finishes with solidity, grip, and savory saltiness.

Vinous (90)Moderately saturated medium red. Brown spices and oak on the nose. Then pure, dense and complex on the palate, with spicy red fruit flavors and a rather silky texture for the vintage and for this bottling. Comes across as more vivid than the Combottes. This dense, sweet wine has the stuffing to buffer its tannins. Classy, vivid Morey-easier to taste today than the 2007 version. Excellent for this cuvee

Vinous (94)The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière is tightly-wound on the nose with blackberry, raspberry, hints of singed leather and spice. I appreciate the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, chalky in texture with a grip and certainly impressive focus on the finish. This is an excellent Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Burghound (93)A more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of dark berry coulis, cassis, lilac, violet and discreet earth wisps. The rich velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the impressively long if robust and moderately rustic finale. This is excellent but will definitely need patience.

Vinous (90-92)The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de la Bussière 1er Cru contains around 50% whole bunches, yet the stem addition is better integrated than the Chambolle-Village, allowing the terroir to come through. Wonderful definition here with airy and pure red fruit. The palate is very well balanced with fine structure, more cohesion, superb mineral tension with a harmonious bay leaf tinged finish. This is a finely crafted Morey-Saint-Denis from Roumier.
