    Domaine Hubert Lamy

    About Domaine Hubert Lamy

Lamy is a historic name in Burgundy, with a vine growing history in St-Aubin stretching as far back as 1640. However, it is Olivier Lamy, the current owner and winemaker of the family estate, who put this artisanal estate on the international fine wine stage.

A diligent vigneron representing the new generation of exciting winemakers, Olivier is keen to make progress in both his vineyard and cellar. Having sharpened his craft at Méo-Camuzet before taking over the family estate in 1996, he established a very sharp acumen for identifying the best and oldest sites. Adding his natural winemaking instinct to more technical knowledge such as how to train vines flexibly, his exquisitely fine and terroir-expressive wines are celebrated by Burgundian connoisseurs the world over.

    Vinous (89-92)

(from redder soil over rock; 30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Pale yellow. Aromas of iodine, crushed rock and spicy oak. Chewy and densely packed but quite backward, currently dominated by wet stone and mineral notes. Finishes powerful but youthfully austere, with a repeating wet stone character. Lamy has been planting part of this vineyard at high density, but this fruit is not yet part of the wine. (Incidentally, Lamy did not make a Chassagne-Montrachet Les Macharelles in 2016 owing to the frost.)

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Concis de Champs had wild variations in potential alcohol and acidity levels, caused by differing rootstocks, vine ages, pruning techniques, etc., that made it difficult for Olivier Lamy to pick. This has a bright red apple and lime bouquet that feels well defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and very pure. A lovely touch of bitter lemon enlivens and lends edge on the finish. Excellent.

Lamy's superb 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots delivers a striking bouquet of citrus oil, Anjou pear, wet stones and nutmeg, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and searingly mineral palate that's long and penetrating. It's easy to overlook this cuvée while pursuing its profound "Haut Densité" sibling, but that would be a mistake, as this is one of the finest communal Puligny-Montrachet bottlings one can find.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots Vieilles Vignes had just completed its malolactic when I visited at the end of October. It has a pithy, pear and red apple scented bouquet with a light sea spray note. The palate is well balanced with sour lemon, orange zest and a long saline finish. This is a tremendous Puligny that should age with style.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 St Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chateniere from Domaine Hubert & Olivier Lamy was not as clean on the nose as its peers, slightly cheesy at first and then light mothball scents. The palate is fresh on the entry with a pretty kiwi fruit and Cornice pear opening; but it never achieves the same level of tension and focus as other premier crus from the appellation, and it seems to drift on the finish. This may well be entering a dumb phase, and it may well re-find the promise it demonstrated from barrel, hence my plus sign.

    Vinous (87-89)

Pale yellow. Musky aromas of ripe apple, orange zest and toast; in a slightly oxidative phase. Fat and rich on the palate for a wine with 12.8% alcohol, with peach and apple flavors conveying a low-acid impression. A touch bitter on the finish. These vines on hard calcaire and friable clay produce small yellow grapes that ripen quickly at the end--and especially in 2015, according to Lamy.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Saint-Aubin Clos de Meix 1er Cru comes from hard limestone soils in the middle of the village. It has an intense, quite malic bouquet featuring Granny Smith apples, freshly sliced pear and sea spray. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, impressive weight in the mouth and a harmonious, saline finish that bodes well for the future. I can see this aging well.

The 2010 St. Aubin En Remilly is another gorgeous, complete wine. It shows the brighter, more focused style of village. Citrus, white flowers and crushed rocks all take shape in the glass as this vibrant, chiseled Burgundy opens up in the glass. The finish is long, textured and absolutely impeccable.

The 2015 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly is excellent, offering up a pure and unadorned bouquet of crisp green apples, white flowers and crushed chalk that's classic Lamy. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, stony and saline, with bright, tangy acids and a pure, mineral finish. Right now, it's tight-knit and reserved, so several years' patience is advised.

    Vinous (91-93)

Aromas of lemon, menthol, crushed rock and ginger, plus a suggestion of spicy oak. Very rich, pliant wine with compelling sweetness and terrific energy to its flavors of crystallized lemon and lime and minerals; there's also a pear note here that reminded me of Chassagne-Montrachet. Conveys a strong impression of sappy density without weight, with the smooth, slowly mounting, gripping finish coating the palate with crunchy fruit and saline crushed-stone minerality. This assemblage of multiple parcels should make an outstanding Saint-Aubin wine.

    Vinous (88-91)

(30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Pale yellow. Brisk aromas of lemon and ginger. Then surprisingly supple in the mouth, offering captivating flavors of grilled hazelnut, spices and white pepper. The long, rising finish features strong salty minerality along with a faint hard edge that will require a long élevage.

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes was showing brilliantly, soaring from the glass with notes of pear, lemon oil, wheat toast and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's layered and complete, with lively acids and a long, precise finish. At 13.8% alcohol, this is one of the riper wines in the cellar, yet that was imperceptible when I tased it.

A blend of 10 different parcels, the 2020 Saint-Aubin La Princée has a pretty nose of apple blossom and subtle granitic scents, focused with modest intensity. The palate is well-balanced with a dash of white pepper on the entry, fine acidity, quite fiery on the finish in a positive sense. Lots of energy coiled up here.
