Hubert Lignier
About Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate. The domaine was founded in 1880 when Jacques Lignier purchased plots of vines in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the 1960s the domaine was expanded to 8ha. Today the domaine is managed by the father and son partnership of Hubert and Laurent Lignier, who make 24 different wines at all levels of classification. Wine-making here is described by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) as “classical”.
It is fair to say that Domaine Hubert Lignier flies just a little below the radar screen of many more casual Burgundy fans. But to those in the know, their flagship Clos-de-La-Roche Grand Cru is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’s hidden gems. And their other Grand and Premier Cru expressions are surprisingly (for Burgundy) affordable wines.

Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a lovely menthol-tinged bouquet, redcurrant and cranberry, light tertiary notes developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, white pepper and cumin. Lovely balance here, the new oak is well integrated. Just a pity, only two barrels were produced. |

Vinous (93-95)Situated in Mazoyères, the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose with precise black fruit laced with blueberry and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with graphite, quite strict and linear with good grip on the finish. One of the more structured Charmes-Chambertins that you will find in this vintage. Just one barrel made in 2019. |

Vinous (96-98)The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from the two terroirs, the majority from Mont Luisants and one-third from Fremières. The vines were planted in the Sixties and the late Fifties respectively. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, briary and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, concentrated as you would expect since it was cropped at around 25hl/ha with wonderful minerality on the finish. Outstanding. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard comes from purchased fruit. It has a refined bouquet with black fruit, black olive and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins on the entry. This is structured and strict, a little austere on the finish - hopefully it will gain some flesh by the time of bottling. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis "Trilogie" comes from three lieux-dits: Chenevery (50%), Clos Salon (15%) and Les Porroux (35%). It has a crisp, quite airy, open bouquet with vibrant black cherry and briary aromas, fine definition with a touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The one-third whole bunches is nicely integrated and lending black pepper notes on the lively finish. Recommended. |
