The classic Massolino 2016 Barolo sources its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, although a tiny percentage of Castiglione Falletto is part of the blend. This wine is linear and tight, with an arsenal of important Nebbiolo aromas ranging from red cherry and cassis to spice, smoke, licorice, dried ginger, rusty nail and blood orange. What really stands out is the structural importance of the wine. It delivers firmness and strength, while allowing the delicate side of the grape to coexist without interference. An ample 70,000 bottles of this well-priced Barolo were produced.

Serralunga d'Alba. Youthful mid ruby. Beguiling nose of concentrated cherry, dark spice and minerally, stony notes. Shows real generosity on the nose. Palate equally generous, with concentrated, juicy sour-cherry fruit lined with long, powdery tannins. Hedonistic, for sure, and so confident! Ready now but will improve. Simply delicious and definitely one of the vintage's best buys.

While at the village level in 2018 we seem to find more dilute wines, Massolino should be considered an exception because they produced just a village Barolo, a blend of all their MGAs, including Vigna Rionda. The wine shines for its bright ruby colour, meaty and tarry with a incredible depth of rhubarb and minerality. Open-knit with its wild strawberry and cherry fruits, it flows on the velvety palate, lean yet refined, with polished tannins and brilliant integrated acidity. The finish is all cherry kernel and liquorice root. With this 2018 the estate confirms its consistency.

Blue flower and eucalyptus aromas shape the nose along with whiffs of new leather and dark spice. It’s elegantly structured, with taut, fine-grained tannins that accompany juicy Marasca cherry, strawberry compote and star anise. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and bright.

This is smoky, with tobacco- and mineral-tinged cherry and strawberry flavors. Quickly gives way to firm, mouthcoating tannins, yet finds equilibrium overall, lingering well. Best from 2019 through 2035. 150 cases imported. -BS

The 2015 Barolo Margheria is the first single-vinyard Barolo I tasted from Massolino in a lineup that started with the most delicate wine and ended with the most powerful expression. Considering that we are talking about Serralunga d'Alba (the township known for the most powerful Baroli overall), the word "delicate" should be taken with a grain of salt. The vines here are 37 years old, and the soils are slightly looser and sandier in nature. This wine is just slightly more accessible than the other cru expressions with elegant mineral notes that frame dark fruit, spice and pressed violets. This could be a good pairing opportunity with Florentine tripe in a tomato sauce.

The 2016 Barolo Margheria is super-refined and elegant, but it is also classically austere, as so many top wines are in this vintage. Bright red berry fruit, wild flowers, mint, blood orange, rose petal and cinnamon all grace this very pretty, nuanced Barolo. The Margheria is medium in body, and despite its austerity, it is also very pretty, not to mention incredibly inviting. It will be even better in another few years, once the tannins soften. Readers will have to be patient.

The 2017 Barolo Margheria is a compelling, multi-faceted Barolo loaded with personality. Sage, mint, lavender, spice, iron and red/purplish berry fruit grace this firm, classically built Barolo. This translucent, taut Barolo has so much to offer, but it also needs time to soften. Readers will find a terrific example of Margheria.

Aromas of camphor, new leather and rose form the nose along with whiffs of forest berry. Showing intensity and elegance, the full-bodied, focused palate features juicy raspberry, black cherry, baking spice and licorice supported by firm, refined tannins. It’s still young but well balanced, with bright acidity.

The 2004 Barolo Parafada is the softest and most open-knit of Massolino's Barolos. At the time, the Parafada was done partly in French oak, so it has sleeker contours than the other wines in the range, yet it also retains a lovely sense of freshness. Crushed flowers, licorice and spices meld into a core of supple, nicely layered fruit. The 2004 should drink well for at least another decade. This is a strong showing, especially considering Massolino was making the Parafada in a slightly different style that was not really their strongest suit.

The 2015 Barolo Parafada is another gorgeous wine in this lineup. As always, the Parafada is defined by its huge center of fruit and ample, broad-shouldered feel. Whereas Margheria and Vigna Rionda - the other two Serralunga Barolos in this range - are more aromatically expressive, the Parafada is a wine of density and mid-palate resonance. These vines, planted in 1960 (the estate's oldest) confer weight and gravitas. In this vintage, the Parafada is particularly beautiful.

Serralunga d'Alba. Youthful mid ruby. Savoury and minerally cherry fruit on the nose. Compact, sour-cherry palate that is elegant and lively, but still embryonic and with a rich layer of finely woven tannins. Cranberry and sour cherry of great length on the finish. The palate really lulls you into thinking you could approach it now.

The 2010 Barolo Parussi hits its stride with an amazing bouquet that is as generous as it is complex and compelling. The wine boasts a dark ruby color with delicate amber highlights and shows a deep level of color saturation and richness. Its perfumes are redolent of sweet cherry, black fruit, dark licorice, cigar ash and wet earth. There’s a bright floral note of pressed red rose that lifts delicately as the wine warms in the glass. The meeting of the wine’s acidic component and its tannic firmness is absolutely seamless. Drink: 2017-2030.

The 2013 Barolo Parussi, the only Massolino Barolo made from Castiglione Falletto fruit, is also the most accessible of the single-vineyard Barolos. All the Parussi signatures of bright red fruit, flowers and citrus are present, but they are amped by the unnaturally low yields of the year in this site that also give the wine more mid-palate plushness and power than is typically the case. Orange peel, herbs, mint, licorice, crushed flowers and sweet red cherry build in an exotic, beguiling Barolo full of personality. The 2013 Parussi has been alluring every time I have tasted it.

This wine was not made in 2014, when this vineyard site in Castiglione Falletto was hit by not one but two violent hailstorms. Thankfully, the 2015 Barolo Parussi comes from a trouble-free growing season and has resulted in one of the best expressions of the cru made by Massolino thus far, with the first vintage produced in 2007. This site sees a unique soil profile, with sand that is much richer in organic materials compared to the estate's historic vineyard sites. The terrain enjoys two exposures because the vines are planted over the crest of a hill. Harvest comes later here, as well, because the growing cycle is slower and Parussi is one of the last parcels to show beautiful leaf color in the autumn. Thanks to all those extra variables, the winemaking team has a little more to play with in order to achieve complexity and integration. In our progression from least to most powerful single-vineyard wines tasted, this was the third wine in the lineup. Indeed, this wine offers more "grasso" or body weight and volume. Dark mineral tones make for an elegant finish. However, the tannins are very young and need more time to soften. This is your proverbial cellar wine.

The 2016 Barolo Parussi is the most overt and fruity of the 2016s. That is not a bad thing at all, as it gives the wine striking immediacy and mid-palate sweetness. Succulent red and purplish berry fruit, spice and mint come together in the glass. Silky, floral and medium in body, the Parussi captures all of the sensuality that is typical of the Barolos of Castiglione Falletto. Best of all, the Parussi will drink well earlier than the wines from Serralunga will.

The 2009 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is an attractive but not particularly inspiring wine in a challenging vintage that I imagine the Massolinos are happy to put behind them. Overall, the 2009 Rionda is soft, pretty and delicate, with lovely aromatics and fine overall balance. The polished finish only adds to the wine's appeal. As good as it is, the 2009 Rionda doesn't quite capture the full pedigree of this justly famous site.

Hailing from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the entire denomination, this focused beauty boasts layers of complexity and depth, starting with its classic Nebbiolo aromas of forest floor, new leather, violet and wild berry. Balanced and firmly structured, the palate shows tension, power and elegance, delivering succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, tobacco and licorice alongside firm, aristocratic tannins. It's still young but already beautifully balanced, with bright acidity.

The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a stunning wine. Sweet, perfumed and deep, the 2014 is off-the-charts great. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and hard candy infuse the 2014 with striking layers of nuance. But what really impresses about the 2014 is its depth and huge vertical build. All the elements fall into place in a sumptuous, deep Barolo that screams with character. Beams of tannin punctuate the finish. Massolino's 2014 is one of the greatest Vigna Riondas I have ever tasted.

Cherry, strawberry, rose, iron and menthol flavors highlight this supple red. There's plenty of backbone, and woodsy notes chime in, but this is more about the expressive berry fruit and elegant side of Barolo, ending with a terrific finish. Nonetheless, this will require several years for the tannins to be absorbed. To be released September 2022. Best from 2025 through 2045. 1,000 cases made, 250 cases imported.
