    Méo-Camuzet

    About Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is one of Burgundy’s big names.  Until 1988 most of the holdings were leased out. Now Jean-Nicolas Méo and Christian Faurois are making some of Cote d’Or’s best wine. Using organic farming on their great plots; they boast four Grand Cru and ten Premier Cru sites in Nuits St George and Vosne-Romanée.

Today, the fortunes of this magical Domaine and its standing as a winemaking entity could not be further removed from this period which, quite shockingly, actually saw a sizable share of its fruit sold to négociants! The proud master of over 2.5 hectares of Grands Crus and 8 of 1er, some of the most hallowed terroir in Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée is owned and its fruit vinified by Méo-Camuzet.

Prior to the arrival of current stewards Jean-Nicholas Méo and Christian Faurois, two of the most monumental Burgundian personalities were fundamental in the history of Méo-Camuzet. The first being its namesake Etienne Camuzet, an important political figure in the early 20th century who, aside from purchasing the bulk of what we know as Domaine Méo-Camuzet holdings today including Château de Clos de Vougeot (later gifted to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), made numerous important decisions throughout the region with regards to what parcels could be included in Grand Cru classification.

The second, and quite possibly the single greatest Burgundian winemaker of the 20th century, was Henri Jayer. Specifically invited by the owners of Domaine Méo-Camuzet to tend to their vines since the 1940s due to his already formidable reputation, the masterful vigneron remained a sharecropper of the Domaine’s holdings until 1988 when it moved to vinify its plots itself. Following the transformation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet into an almighty winemaking presence in its own right, Jayer remained a consultant and was utterly instrumental in its ascension to the very pinnacle of Burgundian fine wine.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru comes from two vineyards, La Perrière and Terre Blanches, the former affected by hail in August. It has a relatively simple bouquet, though it seems fresh and focused. The palate is lighter in style, quite elegant, nicely poised if just missing a little substance on the finish.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which comes from Les Hauts Pruliers (this is unlikely to be mentioned on the label). This is a significant level up from the Village with precise light red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite linear and grippy, dark berry fruit towards the finish.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)

Fresh mid purple. Just a touch of reduction but the fruit dominates. Vibrant, with pure red fruit, then a liquorice note, but very lively and enormously consistent across the palate with balanced acidity and light tannins. Long finish. Tasted: December 2021.

    Vinous (89-92)

Deep red-ruby. Strawberry, spices and dark chocolate on the nose, complemented by a smoky element and lifted by a floral topnote. Nicely fat and sweet but also quite detailed. Despite its youthful medicinal reserve, this will be a charmer. Finishes tasty and long, with integrated tannins.

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru (a vineyard where Jean-Nicolas Méo controls everything during the growing season) has a fresh, quite minerally bouquet that shows plenty of vigor. The palate is well balanced and quite effervescent, offering supple tannin; a little firmness crops up toward the ferrous finish. Fine.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes 1er Cru is under the négociant label but the vineyard is completely worked by the domaine. The wine has a clean, precise bouquet of vivacious red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, and a little lower in acidity than I expected, with a candied finish. Give it 2–4 years in bottle.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes (Méo-Camuzet Frère & Soeurs) mingles notes of raspberries, cassis and plums with hints of rose petals and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's rich and enveloping, with a charming, generous profile. As I wrote last year, Méo not only purchases the grapes from this parcel but also farms the vineyard.

These vines were under a fermage agreement with the M o-Camuzet n gociant arm for almost 20 years. Alas, they were taken back in 2021. So, this is the last bottling of this wine. It's a shame, because it is thoroughly charming with the dignified lightness that Chambolle often brings along with heady perfume. Here are aromas of mulberries, cherry preserves, dried flowers and cocoa bordered by fluffy tannins and suave acidity. 2022-30

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has more vibrancy and energy compared directly with the Aux Murgers. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly angular tannins, a little more acidity than the Aux Murgers and good tension and nervosité toward the finish, imparted by the 10% added stems. It needs a little time in bottle, but it should turn out to be a fine Les Boudots.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a very expressive bouquet with ebullient red and blue fruit combined with violet and crushed stone scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with quite a strict finish that indicates that this will need some bottle age.

(this cuvee had been racked a week prior to my visit) Deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of blackberry, minerals, cracked pepper, roasted herbs, spices, tar and bitter chocolate. Superripe yet cool, with exotic berry and menthol flavors that are currently a bit disassociated. Comes across as quite structured, but I suspect it has been hardened by the recent sulfuring. But this boasts very good flavor intensity, firm tannins and excellent length.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru has a clean, delineated bouquet of dark cherry, raspberry and light bergamot aromas, all understated. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, fine acidity, a slightly creamy texture, moderate depth and a rather conservative finish.

The 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing particularly well—just like its 2018 predecessor at the same stage of its élevage. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, wild berries, rich soil tones, spices and grilled meats, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with lively acids, beautifully refined tannins and a charming, gourmand profile.

Pick up some 2020 while you can as 11 barrels were made. In 2021, only four were made. This will need a few years to come around with its slightly drying tannins, but otherwise, this is almost ready to enjoy. The mid-palate feels satiny and tastes of black cherries and licorice. The whole package is lifted by well-placed acidity that dances across the back palate. 2024-30

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru is under the négoce label, although Méo-Camuzet is responsible for both viticulture and winemaking. This has a clean, pure floral bouquet of blueberry and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite compact and displaying good density. Surprisingly muscular toward the finish. Very primal and a bit burly at the moment. I would like to see just a little more elegance.

    Wine Spectator (95)

A powerhouse of a wine. Combines a modern style (some toasted new oak) with pedigreed Burgundian terroir to near perfection. Thick but classy, this seductive Pinot bursts with pure and focused black and red berry character. Deep, complex yet not complicated--a sheer joy of Pinot expression. Drink now through 2010. 112 cases made. -PM
