    Merryvale

    About Merryvale

Built in 1933 by Jack Riorda and a group of partners, Merryvale (then known as Sunny St. Helena) was the first winery built in Napa Valley after Prohibition and quickly attracted the attention of Cesare Mondavi, who joined the partnership in 1937. It was at this historic estate where Peter and Robert Mondavi first got to try their hands at winemaking. The winery underwent a few ownership changes and operated as a Co-Operative until 1983, when it was acquired by Bill Harlan and Robin Daniel Lail (great-grandniece of Gustave Niebaum, who founded Inglenook Winery), who used Merryvale to produce a few vintages of Harlan Estate wines, clearly showing the potential and pedigree of Merryvale. Robert M. Parker Jr. affirmed this in his tasting of the 1993 vintage:

“This property has recently shown significant progress in the quality and complexity of its wines. Winemaker Bob Levy and consulting French oenologist Michel Rolland have moved to a more natural winemaking style, with full malolactic fermentation for the whites… How good it is to see this winery begin to produce such high quality wines.”
    Robert M. Parker Jr.

The estate has been fully owned by the Schlatter family since 1996, and is currently helmed by René Schlatter, winner of the Wine Enthusiast’s “Person of the Year” award in 2011.
