Montepeloso

About Montepeloso
Montepeloso is the boutique estate of Fabio Chiarelotto, who is now a serious rising star in Tuscany. His tiny 6ha property is located right next to Tua Rita estate, in a special part of Tuscany cooled by maritime breezes and under pinned by iron-rich soils and petrified clay. Fabio has put an incredible amount of work into his vineyard, with the sole aim of producing wines of purity and finesse, rather than pure power and concentration sometimes found in this region.
Montepelosos' Wines
The wines of Montepeloso were highlighted recently by both Vinous and Wine Advocate, and there is a lot of excitement about Montepeloso right now – so much so that these wines are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of.

The 2019 A Quo, Montepeloso’s entry-level red, delivers the goods and then some. Fresh, floral and beautifully lifted, the 2019 offers up a bevy of crushed berry fruit, rose petal and cinnamon, all in a mid-weight style that emphasizes freshness and energy to balance the natural richness of Tuscany's Maremma. Medium in body and wonderfully translucent, the 2019 is an absolute beauty. Best of all, it’s a steal.Montepeloso A Quo 2019 (6x75cl)

The 2018 Eneo, Montepeloso’s Montepulciano-based blend, is redolent of crushed red berry fruit, licorice, blood orange, star anise and rose petal. Bright and gracious, with terrific purity, the Eneo beautifully captures the understated, nuanced style of the year. It is a bit more red-toned than I recall from barrel. This is so nicely done.Montepeloso Eneo 2018 (6x75cl)

The 2009 Gabbro (Cabernet Sauvignon) is impeccable and refined from start to finish. This isn't a vintage built on structure, as has been the case in the recent past, but rather a wine that impresses for its silky tannins, expressive aromatics, and overall finesse. The 2009 is quite feminine and gracious in style, but there is plenty of underlying tannin and fruit. In exchange, the 2009 should drink well earlier than some of the other, more important vintages that precede it.Montepeloso Gabbro 2009 (6x75cl)

The 2015 Gabbro is deep and richly textured, and yet also remains light on its feet. Pliant and enveloping, the 2015 is super-refined. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, mint, licorice and lavender infuse this nuanced, expressive Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon. Stylistically, the 2015 is quite a bit different from the more bombastic wines that have been made here in the past. A bit light, but super-finessed. I can't wait to see how it ages.Montepeloso Gabbro 2015 (6x75cl)

Montepeloso's 2015 Nardo is beautiful. The ripeness of the vintage comes through, but Nardo has just enough aromatic freshness and lift to balance the intensity of the fruit. Red cherry, red plum, mint, pomegranate and floral notes are all nicely pushed forward in this succulent, inviting wine from Montepeloso. There is lovely brightness and floral lift to the red fruit character.Montepeloso Nardo 2015 (6x75cl)

The 2016 Nardo is distinguished by a whole range of floral, savory and blood orange notes that give the wine striking aromatic brightness and perfume. Powerful and dense on the palate, with tremendous structure, the 2016 is incredibly racy today. Even with all of its richness, Nardo remains so precise and finely cut, with a real sense of saline-infused energy that drives the flavors. It is simply stunning. Wow!Montepeloso Nardo 2016 (6x75cl)

Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto and longtime winemaker Fabrizio Moltard ratchet things up with their stellar 2018 Nardo. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, gravel, spice, underbrush, menthol, licorice and scorched earth give the 2018 its distinct, sepia-toned personality. Dark and brooding in the glass, with imposing tannins, the 2018 is a flat-out stunner. Give it a few years in bottle first. Nardo is built around a core of Sangiovese, with Montepulciano, Alicante and Malvasia Nera. Chiarelotto has reduced the presence of Montepulciano in the blend. If the 2018 is any indication, that choice looks to be spot on.Montepeloso Nardo 2018 (6x75cl)
