Vinous (92)The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fragrant nose: Morello cherries, freshly-picked cranberry and crushed stone, quite Mazis-like in style. The palate is fresh with a tobacco-tinged entry, lightly spiced with a fine grip on the finish. Maybe I would have liked more substance and a more lavish finish for a Charmes-Chambertin, but this should still drink well for 15-20 years. |

Vinous (86)The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is laden with dark cherries, damson on the nose and very fruit-forward, but I feel at the expense of terroir expression. The palate is quite candied on the entry, powerful and demonstrative. Though the fruit profile is attractive, I think this is just a bit overwhelming and needs to show more restraint. |

Vinous (89)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows better than the sample tasted in London, hence my higher score. It has an attractive, though not compelling bouquet with rose petal and incense-tinged red fruit, predominantly raspberry and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with some chewiness on the entry, plenty of extract here, a little powdery in texture with what you might describe as a "gutsy" finish. It just needs a little more flair. |

Vinous (90)The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru also shows better than the sample encountered in London. There is more minerality on the nose now, finer delineation, whilst the palate seems to have attained more focus and lost some of that bitterness on the finish. A higher score is due. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, black truffle and light pencil shaving scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine depth, a little firm and peppery towards the finish, but this shows much better delineation than Tortochot’s Premier Crus. |

Vinous (87-89)The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Charmes 1er Cru has an earthy, autumnal bouquet with brown leaves filtering through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite compact yet with decent focus on the finish. All that is missing is just a bit of flair. |
