    About Trape Père et Fils

    The Domaine was founded by Louis Trapet in 1870, who hailed from Southeastern France and chose to settle in Gevrey-Chambertin during the French Revolution. He gradually acquired prime vineyards in the appellation and by the 1920s, had become one of Burgundy’s most important vineyard owners. Fruit from their vineyards was regularly sold to top négociants such as Leroy, Drouhin and Liger-Belair and the Domaine only bottled their first wine with the 1959 vintage.

    In 1990, the Domaine underwent a split, with Domaine Rossignol-Trapet managed by Nicolas and David Rossignol while the original Domaine became known as Domaine Trapet Père et Fils, currently managed by the fifth generation of the family, Jean-Louis Trapet.

Strong, sappy and ripe but not at all overly sweet; less expressive today than the Chapelle owing to its very firm mineral core but this slightly sauvage wine should be superb with five or six years of bottle aging. Finishes with ripe, harmonious, toothcoating tannins and impressive persistence.

    The 2017 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tight-lipped bouquet, reticent at the moment, though it reluctantly opens with blackberry, bilberry and light graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and a supremely well judged line of acidity that makes this Grand Cru feel so natural and refined. This is a rare case of a sensual Latricières in the making. Bon vin!

    The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is more subdued on the nose than Faiveley's Mazis-Chambertin: scents of baked cherry, bergamot, wild strawberry and quite pronounced sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, taut and linear. Some new oak momentarily just impedes the finish that detracts from the terroir expression, but it does cohere wonderfully in the glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, which was picked around 7 September, has a vibrant nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone (basalt?) and faint liquorice scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, cohesive and with great depth. There is just a touch of oak to be subsumed on the finish, so give this 4-6 years in bottle.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

    5 Star Wine. Louis considers that Latricières-Chambertin is typically three degrees cooler than neighbouring Combottes. 40% whole bunch vinification. Glowing purple. A touch of reduction on the nose but a vibrant luxurious fruit nonetheless. There is a gorgeous coating of a deep dark velvet fruit with the structure behind perfectly poised, refined tannins and clean acidity. Very long. A gorgeous wine in the making. Louis feels that 2020 lost the plot of Latricières – but not at all 2021.
