Sparkling
While Champagne is the most famous region for sparkling wine, many other regions around the world produce high-quality sparkling wines using the traditional method, also known as the méthode champenoise.
One of the most famous of these regions is the Franciacorta region in Italy, which produces a range of high-quality sparkling wines using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc grape varieties. Franciacorta wines are known for their crisp acidity, fine bubbles, and complex flavours.
In Spain, the Cava region produces sparkling wines made primarily from the Macabeo, Parellada, and Xarel-lo grape varieties. Cava wines are known for their crisp acidity, citrus flavours, and minerality.
In Germany, the Sekt region produces sparkling wines made from a variety of grape varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir. German Sekt wines are known for their crisp acidity, fine bubbles, and fruit-forward flavours.
In the United States, the Napa Valley region in California produces high-quality sparkling wines using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. These wines are known for their rich, complex flavuors and aromas, with notes of citrus, apple, and toast.
Other regions around the world that produce high-quality sparkling wines include the Loire Valley in France, Tasmania in Australia, and the South of England.

Tim Atkin (97)Like the 2012 release - there was no 2013 - the latest release of Cuvée Clive is a Blanc de Blancs, made with Chardonnay from (mostly) Robertson and Darling. It's the latest in a series of stunning bubblies, with 100% barrel fermentation of the base wine, a toasty, tangy palate, some brioche and cashew and a combination of restraint and understated power. Just as good with an extra year in bottle. 2020-29 |

Jamie Goode (92)This is really refined. The acidity is pronounced but it is elegant acidity that integrates well with the subtly creamy, herbal citrus fruit, with a twist of apricot and mandarin richness in the background. Very fine. |

Jamie Goode (93)This is a varietal Pinot Meunier, mainly from the 2015 vintage (plus some older barrel-aged wines), with zero dosage. A full pink/red colour, this has a powerful nose of red cherries, some rhubarb, and some sappy herby notes. The palate shows lovely herb-tinged, subtly leafy red cherry and strawberry fruit, with the acidity integrated perfectly. Despite the lack of dosage, this doesn’t seem at all acidic or bracing: the fruit carries the palate so well. Nice tartness on the finish, with a little tannic bite that makes it incredibly food friendly. A remarkable wine that defies easy categorization, and beautifully put together. |

Wine Anorak (94)12% alcohol. 88% Pinot Meunier (saignée), 7% Chardonnay, 5% red Pinot Noir, with some reserve wines as well as the core 2016 vintage. Disgorged in August 2022 with a dosage of 5 g/litre. This is a really serious sparkling rosé. It’s a full orange/pink in colour and has beautiful aromatics of orange peel, lime, cranberries and some sappy green notes, leading to a structured palate showing strawberry, marzipan, lime and grapefruit pith, with a lively acid line and some fine spicy framing. There’s even a hint of cream under the vivid fruit. So many layers to this: a serious, gastronomic wine. Incisive. |

Decanter (95)A very impressive, impeccably made wine with everything in its place. It has crisp acidity, some sweetness to the patisserie, cream, bruised apple and white pear flavours, and a generous texture. Vibrant, racy and tense, there's lots more to come from this. |

Jancis Robinson (17+)58% Chardonnay, 31% Pinot Noir, 11% Pinot Meunier. Vintages: 70% 2014, 4% 2013, 6% 2011, 9% 2010, 10% 2009, 1% 2008. Four years on lees. Disgorged May 2019. Outstanding nose, with all the bready complexity of great sparkling. Saline and zippy, with excellent apple and lemon fruit on the palate. Not at all sharp, with excellent balance and flesh on the body. Mature, mushroomy character on the finish. Expertly done. (RH) |

Jancis Robinson (16)Classy. Some sweetness. Delicate nectarine and white-peach sweetness. I wonder if the dosage is quite high here? Lots of fully ripe orchard fruit – apples and peaches and greengages. Rounded with fine fizz. A gentle English fizz, if not the most complex. (TC) |

Rathfinny Estate Blanc de Noirs 2015 is the first vintage of Rathfinny's premium Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend, produced from grapes grown and hand-harvested on Rathfinny Wine Estate. It has an enticing blush sets the scene for perfumed peony and wild strawberry on the nose, while on the palate, its rich mousse of raspberries and toasted almonds gives way to a caramelised red-apple finish.

Vinous (93)The 2016 Blanc de Noirs is aged for 36 months in bottle with a dosage of 3g/L. It has a burnished silvery hue. The well-delineated nose is an absolute delight, presenting scents of orange pith, brioche, toasted pine nuts and a hint of white peach in the background. The palate is well poised with a light walnut opening, quite saline in the mouth and precise toward the finish; a touch of blackberry appears on the aftertaste. Impressive energy and sophistication are clear to see in what might be one of England's best Blanc de Noirs. Highly recommended. |

Jancis Robinson (17)Full bottle 1,664 g. 100% estate-grown grapes, 85% Pinot Noir, 15% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 3.5 g/l. Disgorged 24 January 2022. The Rathfinny vineyard is in Cradle Valley on the South Downs of Sussex. South facing, three miles from the sea, light thin clay loam over chalk. The winery runs on solar energy and deploys waste-water recycling. They've planted indigenous hedging and trees for windbreaks and biodiversity, and are working with Natural England, the National Trust and South Downs National Park to improve local habitat, regenerated the natural chalk grass downland and create wildlife corridors. Liquorice nose. It's hard to believe the dosage is so low, because the ripeness and roundness of fruit on this wine is exceptional. Pin-point-fine bubbles snap the lemon and blueberry fruit into taut lines. There's a cool stoniness, like mossy concrete; an almost imperceptible peppery nuttiness; and then the wine momentarily widens into sweet pear before narrowing into a piercing finish. |

Rathfinny Rosé Brut 2016 is the second vintage of Rathfinny's flagship sparkling wine, with an expressive red-fruit style that beautifully showcases the increased presence of Pinot Noir within the blend. Vivid coral in hue, it has a lifted nose of wild strawberries and mandarin zest, giving way to a rich mousse of Rainier cherries and candied red apple skin, and a silky, strawberry shortcake finish.
