Agrapart Complantee Extra Brut Grand Cru NV (6x75cl)

Vinous (93+)

Agrapart’s NV Extra Brut Complantée Grand Cru, a field blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Chardonnay, is just sublime. Gracious and lifted, with tremendous aromatic depth, the Complantée is utterly beguiling. White flowers, mint and orchard fruit are just some of the many nuances that emerge. In the glass, the Complantée is bright and airy. The blend of varieties yields a Champagne that is so distinctive, both in terms of its flavor profile and structural feel. This release is a blend of equal parts 2016 and 2015. Dosage: 5 gr/L. Disgorged: May, 2019.

Albert Bichot Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2016 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru was picked on 3 October, blended with 35% whole bunch fruit and matured in 40% new oak. I appreciate the nose here: very well defined, nicely focused, a mixture of red and black fruit, a little conservative and straightlaced like Latricières should be. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with a really classy and sophisticated finish that is a joy. One of the best from Albert Bichot this year. Recommended.

Arnaud Mortet Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95-97)

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 25% whole-bunch fruit. It has a lovely blackberry and briar scented bouquet, the millerandage lending real intensity and the 70% new oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is wonderfully defined with a fine line of acidity, demonstrating more complexity and terroir expression than the Mazoyères and great sustain on the finish. Superb.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Griotte Chambertin Grand Cru includes 25% whole-bunch fruit. It has more red fruit on the nose compared to the black fruit of the Mazoyères-Chambertin—very detailed and expressive with hints of blood orange coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, touches of dried blood, something almost ferrous toward the poised, saline finish. This has great personality and it should age with style.

A firm and refined blanc de blancs, with a streak of minerality running through finely layered flavors of Gala apple, lemon zest, biscuit and fresh finger. A tangy saline note echoes on the lasting finish.

Cask sample. Mid dark crimson. Sweet oak spice entwined with really ripe cherry fruit. Dark, dry finesse on the palate. Extremely elegant but all hidden at the moment. Plenty of freshness like a seam through the dark, dry youthful reticence.

(30% new oak; 100% destemmed) Good full red. Enticing aromas of brown spices, flowers and herbs. Broad and opulent but with very good acidity for the year. The flavors of red berries, spices and peppery herbs are sweetened by the wine’s oak element. Finishes with firm, slightly drying tannins.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive marine influence on the nose, which takes you straight out to sea. The palate is medium-bodied with much redder fruit than the Gevrey-Lavaux '13: not complex, but nicely balanced with a lithe, harmonious finish that feels gentle, almost understated. I like that.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2013 (3x150cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2013 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was picked from October 8. I prefer the bouquet to that of the more confit-like 2014; this is very fresh and vivacious, offering black cherries mixed with blueberry and light violet aromas, the mineral component more expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit on the entry, tinged with graphite. Shows good weight but tightens up toward the back end, suggesting that it may close down. Quite saline on the finish. Give it 7–8 years in bottle. Tasted at Clos de Tart.

Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2012 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Musigny Vielles Vignes Grand Cru from de Vogüé has slightly brighter and more vivacious fruit than J-F Mugnier, and in fact, the two wines seem to go in two different trajectories in the glass, this blossoming and the other becoming more occluded. De Vogüé's Musigny is unashamedly floral in style, very elegant and yet delineated. There is a noticeable estuary scents, mudflats and seaweed, that begin to permeate the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, wonderful acidity and succinctly integrated new oak that is barely tangible. It is intense but elegant, long and tender in the mouth. It is a fabulous Musigny, one of the best that the domaine has produced in recent years.

Vinous (92)

The 2015 Corton La Vigne Au Saint Grand Cru has a clean, slightly smudged bouquet of raspberry, cranberry, ash and pressed flowers; it’s just a shame there is not more precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit matched with a silver bead of acidity. Good density and grip in the mouth, and fine delineation on the finish. This actually improves in the glass. Promising. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru VV 1987 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91)

My personal offering to Veronique Drouhin’s La Paulee was a bottle of 1987 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, bought just a few days earlier after reading Clive Coates’s bon mots in his recently published “My Favourite Burgundies.” Mr Coates was dead right, for even in such auspicious company this is such a pretty grand cru. Pale in color, the nose is featherweight but beautifully defined with tart red-cherry fruit, rose petals and minerals – feminine and beguiling. The palate opens wonderfully in the glass, just pure Pinote. Nothing complex, nothing profound, but utterly bewitching, this is everything you could wish for in a mature off-vintage Burgundy. Divine.

Burghound (94)

The ripe and ultra-fresh aromas are from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while including plenty of spice, warm earth, menthol and plenty of sauvage character. There is both fine detail and a beguiling texture to the equally broad-shouldered and even more mineral-inflected flavors that possess even better complexity on the balanced and hugely long finish. Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2005 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95-96)

The 2005 Grands-Echezeaux displays an utterly different, less charming personality than its “little” sibling. Fresh black raspberry and black cherry hover between sorbet-like and faintly-caramelized manifestations. The palate is obviously dense, with considerable grip and ultra-fine tannins, incipient silkiness, but not the creaminess of the Echezeaux. Fresh berry, faintly tart fruit skin, and nut oils inform an uncannily kinetic finish that makes one’s mouth quiver.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru 1971 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 1971 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was poured from magnum. It had a powerful, almost burly bouquet as you would expect from this vineyard—perhaps autumnal, brown leaves and a cold Sunday afternoon, touches of Earl Grey infused the dark berry fruit (darker than the 1971 Grands Echézeaux tasted alongside incidentally). The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, hints of dried orange peel infusing the black and red fruit, all with impressive energy considering that this is now the same age as yours truly. Perhaps I found more breeding on the aforementioned Grands Echézeaux, and yet this is still a gorgeous mature Burgundy that will continue to give immense pleasure over the next decade for those privileged with the experience. Tasted November 2016.

Wine Advocate (90)

From a cold Burgundian cellar, the 1972 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti put in a very creditable showing in this vintage, especially as the 1970s were not particularly distinguished years at the Domaine. Aromas of macerated red fruits, dried rose petal, raw cocoa and savory bass notes precede a medium-full wine with melted tannins, a glossy core of cool fruit, tangy acids and a sapid, saline finish. In this era, DRC bottled barrel-by-barrel, and I’m guessing this bottle hailed from one of the good ones.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (93-96 )

Good deep red. Soil-driven aromas of minerals, brown spices and earthy underbrush. Large-scaled, rich and deep, with a powerful spiciness and outstanding energy in a silky, seamless package. This very unevolved and unforthcoming wine is most impressive today on the extremely long, rising, firmly tannic aftertaste, which offers outstanding punch and goes on and on. This will need at least a decade in the cellar.

Aromas of orange rind, raspberries and cassis mingle with savory nuances of espresso roast, dark chocolate and grilled squab, introducing the 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, a full-bodied, multidimensional wine with good concentration, succulent acids and rich but satiny structuring tannins that concludes with a long and nicely defined finish. This is a very promising wine from Domaine d'Eugénie that I'd expect to land at the upper end of my banded score.

The super fresh, sour-cherry nose leads you into a very concentrated and focused red with a lot of mineral and graphite character. The tannins are a shade firmer than in the other Grand Crus from Faiveley, but it was always that way. Deep, dark and cool finish that goes on and on. Better from 2023.
