Altos Las Hormigas Appellation Gualtallary Malbec 2017 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96+)

After some ups and downs in past vintages, the 2017 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary is every bit as good as the already superb 2017. It's expressive, mineral and vertical, austere, like biting into chalk. It's produced with grapes from a rented plot in a somewhat fashionable appellation that is quite large and diverse. The palate is super austere, dry, serious and mineral, while the nose is expressive and has the wilderness of the place with unusual elegance and freshness for a year like 2017. It finishes long and tasty, with some violets. Could this be their best Gualtallary to date?

Caro 2017 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (97)

This is one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time with blue-fruit, violet and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Crushed-stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and contracted with a level of shyness to its strength. The length derives from the excellence of the cabernet. One for the cellar. Blend of 74% malbec and 26% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023, but exciting to drink all the same.

A giant. Not only in Argentina’s strong suit in terms of power, it also shows finesse and aromatic complexity. There are all manner of blackberries, smoke, chocolate and spicy notes. Built on a panoramic scale, but full of energy and enormous refinement. The finish cascades on and on. A blend of 83% cabernet sauvignon and 17% malbec. Try in 2021.

Cheval des Andes 2007 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91)

The 2007 Cheval des Andes is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Malbec, 4% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot that is aged for 18 months in oak. Tasted on two occasions, it was unexpectedly bashful and unresponsive on first acquaintance. The second meeting was more promising. It offers a ripe bouquet of raspberry coulis, strawberry, vanilla and cedar, augmented by cigar box with a little aeration. It is well-defined, and the oak is neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is fleshy in the mouth, to the point where you would think it was more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. It is nicely balanced, although I searched for more backbone and structure, especially on the finish, which is delineated but laconic. It is undoubtedly a very pleasurable wine, but I feel it could give so much more. Drink now-2017.

Cheval des Andes 2009 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2009 Cheval des Andes is a blend produced with grapes grown in Las Compuertas, in Lujan de Cuyo, from vineyards planted in 1929. It is a big, ripe blend of 59% Malbec, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot which is very deep purple-colored, with a bright rim and an opaque center. The nose is completely closed and ungiving, so you need to exercise your wrist and swirl your glass around energetically and you’ll get rewarded with subtle and complex notes of forest floor, leather, cigar box, and cured meat, but especially shiny, perfectly ripe black fruit aromas. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with velvety tannins, superb integration of the oak and focused flavors of cassis, blueberries, soil and faint violets. Great in a slightly international style, a little ripe. A big, ripe Argentine Cheval. Drink 2015-2022.

Made “like a flan”, according to Ale Vigil, this is a co-fermented blend of Cabernet Franc and 8% Malbec, with lots of whole bunches and aged in old wooden foudres. Zesty and fresh, with the low alcohol and focus that are a feature of El Enemigo style, it’s savoury and bright with salty minerality and graphite and green herb flavours.

El Enemigo Gran Enemigo 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The varietal blend of the 2016 Gran Enemigo is slightly different from the 2015, there's a bit more Cabernet Franc and less Cabernet Sauvignon, so 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Malbec, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine is fresher and more nuanced than the 2015, and there is clout and power but also a lot of finesse and elegance. The palate revealed superb harmony and very fine tannins, the acidity is very integrated and the wine is seamless, with fine chalky minerality and a bitterness in the finish that is salty rather than sweet. There is no room for sweetness in any of these wines; these are savory wines, powerful wines with superb balance and all the ingredients to develop slowly and for a very long time in bottle and destined for the dining table. It fills your mouth, but it's not heavy; it's powerful but feels ethereal. This is probably the finest vintage for this bottling so far. 19,200 bottles were filled in December 2018 from a shorter crop than previous years.

El Enemigo Gran Enemigo El Cepillo 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

The nose of the 2013 Gran Enemigo El Cepillo Single Vineyard has a distinct savory note reminiscent of saffron, thyme, rockrose and other wild herbs along with lemon zest, chicken broth and some cereals that makes it very distinct. I didn't find this set of aromas in the 2012, but I found it again in 2014; and from what winemaker Alejandro Vigil told me, these aromas are also present in 2015 and 2016. It's super complex and powerful, still young and slightly marked by the élevage. The flavors are more conventional, even if you still find a lot of the notes found in the nose. The structure is solid, with fine-grained tannins and very good acidity—an improvement over the initial vintage. 4,000 bottles were filled in March 2016.
