Anwilka 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2013 Anwilka is a blend of 62% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot. It has an attractive raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry bouquet with well-integrated oak. The palate is smooth on the entry with supple red berry fruit laced with bay leaf and clove, leading to a very composed finish that seems more elegant and refined than previous vintages. Bon vin!

Anwilka 2015 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (95)

This is really a phenomenal South African wine for the money showing such delicacy yet also power. The nose boasts plenty of iodine, crushed stones, balsam, violets and hints of sweet herbs. The palate's full and exuberant with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. 64% shiraz, 29% cabernet and 7% petit verdot. Best in 2020.

Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2016 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin (98)

I’m making this for Syrah fanatics”, says Reenen Borman. Lucky them is all I can say, because this is another stunning release from a brilliant young winemaker. Intense, granitic and spicy, with lovely lavender and garrigue aromas, layers of dark, inky fruit, stylish oak and amazing length. What more do you want from a Syrah? 2020-30

David & Nadia Hoe Steen Chenin Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (96)

One of a trio of world-class single site Chenin Blancs from David and Nadie Sadie (no relation to Eben, by the way), this hails from a two-hectare vineyard that was planted in 1968 and is often picked late. Completing full malolactic - such is the acidity in the grapes - this is leesy, focused and taut, with some ferrous grip and a textured palate. 2021-29

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 7% Malbec and 6% Cabernet Franc and spent 22 months in seasoned French oak. It has a classy bouquet of expressive red berry fruit, cedar and light undergrowth aromas that leans toward the Left Bank. The palate is medium-bodied with great sapidity right from the start. The tannins are extremely fine here, and the finish fans out gloriously with just enough bite to tempt you back for another sip. This is an outstanding Cabernet from winemaker Alex Starey.

Keermont Stellenbosch Terrasse 2017 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (94)

Alex Starey is better known for his reds than his whites, but this cuvée of Chenin Blanc with 45% Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne (the last two included for the first time) is wonderful too. Very much a southern Rhône style, it's savoury and herbal, with notes of honeysuckle, stone fruit and citrus, deftly framed by oak.

Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2015 (6x50cl)

Decanter (98)

An historical wine, Vin de Constance has been re-established in the last few years as one of the world’s finest sweet wines. Dried Muscat grapes are aged for three years before bottling, in French and Hungarian casks with a touch of acacia wood. Citrus, orange zest, rosewater and spice notes leap out of the glass. The palate has a laser-like focus with massive sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity and a mineral finish. As impressive as Château d’Yquem (and considerably better value).

Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2016 (6x50cl)

Tim Atkin MW (98)

Increasingly celebrated as one of the great sweet wines of the world, not just the Cape, Vin de Constance is a delight to taste and review. Slightly drier than the 205 release at 165 grams of sugar, it has more in common with the Loire or Tokaji than it does with Sauternes in terms of freshness and structure.

Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Block W Chenin Blanc 2018 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (95)

Block W is located in Faure, very close to the cooling breezes of False Bay on the Bredell farm and is my pick of the Mulderbosch Chenins in 2018. Intense, focused and mealy, with some added texture from 100% malolactic fermentation, lovely weight and concentration and a lingering, bone dry finish.

Chenin Blanc is the marquee variety here, with support from 26% Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Semillon Gris, Viura and Verdelho, most of which is sourced from 37 to 70-year-old vines. Lemon, lime and wet stone flavours with some phenolic grip and remarkable palate length.

Mullineux Quartz Chenin Blanc 2013 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2013 Mullineux Quartz Chenin is a new label that sits alongside the Schist Chenin in the same manner as their Shiraz. It has a quite remarkable and captivating nose that is a different species to the Schist Chenin: opening with glorious cinnamon, clove, hints of turmeric even. The palate is very vibrant and tense with fine acidity, quite compact and less expressive than the aromatics at the moment, with touches of spice towards the finish. Very fine, although I would allow it a couple of years in bottle to allow the palate to develop. Bewitching.

Porseleinberg Swartland Syrah 2018 (12x75cl)

Tim Atkin (100)

In the right hands, great sites produce great wines. Since its inception in 2010, Porseleinberg has been one of the Cape's most exciting reds, but nothing quite prepared me for the transcendent brilliance of this wine. In uenced by some time spent at Domaine Jamet in Côte Rôtie - particularly their use of a submerged cap during fermentation - Callie Louw has made a stunning Syrah, proving his skills as both a farmer and a winemaker. In 2018, the style has shifted, away from power and grip to something more scented and re ned. Focused, nuanced and very delicately oaked, with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, clove and white pepper spice and textured tannins. Simply world class. 2023-35

Raats Mvemve Raats (MR) Compostella 2017 (6x75cl)

Greg Sherwood MW (98+)

The highly anticipated MR de Compostella 2017 red blend is composed of 43% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot. A very deep garnet-purple colour, the nose chimes with the beautiful aromatics of the Cabernet fruits, both Franc and Sauvignon. Superbly bright and lifted, this classy wine reveals attractive perfumed notes of cherry blossom, violets, lilacs and fresh rose petals underpinned by seductive chocolate coated red cherries, crème de cassis, sweet sappy sandalwood spice, bay leaves, fresh pencil shavings and crushed granite rocks. On the palate, the wine is more medium bodied but very refined striking an instant resemblance to the perfumed precision and seductive caressing texture of a Chateau Margaux first growth Bordeaux. There is power, there is intensity and there is focus aplenty but it is all delivered with such majestic elegance and finessed structure to be awe inspiring. Super fine and minerally tightly focused, the vivacious palate shows layers of cigar box, maraschino cherry, crushed black berries, cedar spice and fine-grained mineral sandy tannins. Already possessing incredible poise and focus, this wine shows clarity of purpose and an attention to detail very rarely seen on South African red wines. With little to no perceptible oak character, this impressive blend finishes with a very long, minerally accented persistence that is both compelling and incredibly pretty. A profound wine of beauty and certainly this winery’s most noteworthy release since its blockbuster 2015. Cellar for another 5 years from release and drink over the next 30+ years.

Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous (95)

The 2019 Chenin Blanc Biodynamic comes from two blocks that comprise the oldest vines on the estate. Matured in foudres and used barrels, like its Sauvignon counterpart, it sports a very subtle reduction on the nose that lends it edginess and complexity. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Wonderful mineral tones come through toward the long, fresh, saline finish. This cries out for oysters. A brilliant Chenin Blanc.

Reyneke Cornerstone 2017 (6x75cl)

Vinous (96)

The 2017 Cornerstone, matured in 30% new French oak for 18 months (the Merlot and Cabernet Franc aged in foudre) has an opulent bouquet of lavish dark cherry, cassis, blueberry and whole bunches of freshly picked violets. It would be overwhelming if not for its entrancing purity and pixelation. The palate is medium-bodied with a finely chiseled lattice of tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and wonderful mineralité toward the finish. This is an outstanding wine from Johanne Reyneke and his team.

Vergelegen GVB White 2018 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (95)

Every bit as good as the 2017, even though the vintage is less celebrated, this is an equal marriage of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc with an even lower pH. Grapefruit and elderflower flavours combine appealingly with the stylish vanilla oak, embellished by a herbal undertone.

Made as a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon since 2008, this is the top red at Vergelegen and demonstrates André van Rensburg’s mastery of the variety. It’s a focused, classically proportioned red, combining freshness with concentration, suppleness with structure. Aromatic and refined, it has plenty more to give.

Vilafonte Series M 2018 (6x75cl)

Greg Sherwood MW (97+)

The 2018 Series M is a blend of 45% Merlot, 41% Malbec, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc that was aged for 22 months in 24% new French oak barriques with the remainder aged in used French oak barrels. This wine exhibits an alluringly deep dark garnet-purple colour and wilfully offers forth an exhilarating aromatic array of seductive notions of blueberries, boysenberries, black plum and sweet cassis. The purity and detail is very impressive with delicate violet and vanilla pod nuances combining with notes of star anise, warm buttered brown toast smothered with black cherry preserve, freshly baked pastries, hints of mocha and espresso and some subtle background cedar spice complexing oak notes. The palate shows a wonderfully expansive and multi-dimensional flavour explosion together with a carefully measured richness, pinpoint purity and truly show stopping concentration all delivered with subtlety and jaw-dropping finesse. There is boldness and creamy textured fine-grained supporting tannins but first and foremost, there is freshness, supreme balance and sublime harmony. This very well may be one of the finest young Vilafonte reds I have ever tasted on release. Drink now or cellar for 15+ years.
