Cape D'Estaing Admiral's Reserve Shiraz 2005 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

A barrel sample of the 2005 Shiraz Admiral’s Reserve ratchets up the level of concentration significantly. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a fabulous creme de cassis-scented bouquet revealing notions of smoked meats, creosote, blackberries, and acacia flowers. This deep, powerful, rich, muscular Shiraz will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 10-15.

Cape D'Estaing Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (6x150cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet from six-year old vines) exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color as well as classic aromas of cedar wood interspersed with creme de cassis. Full-bodied and linear, with outstanding structure, texture, and overall purity, it is young and primary, tasting more like a just-bottled barrel sample than a finished wine. Nevertheless, it oozes with character, depth, and persistence. Patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015.

Cape D'Estaing Shiraz 2001 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

From six-year old vines cropped at a mere 2.3 tons of fruit per acre, the brilliant 2001 Shiraz is a candidate for the finest wine ever made on Kangaroo Island. It boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a complex perfume of blackberry liqueur intermixed with licorice, smoke, charcoal, and a hint of wood. Full-bodied as well as remarkably measured, elegant, and restrained for its power and mass, this brilliant achievement somehow walks the tightrope between excessive power and overly processed politeness. It combines intense flavor with tremendous finesse – an extremely difficult accomplishment. The good news continues as there are 2,500 cases of this brilliant Shiraz. It should drink well young yet evolve for 15+ years.

Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Anamorphosis 2005 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96-99)

The Anamorphosis project features Shiraz from Kalimna in the Barossa Valley aged in new oak from four of France’s finest coopers. Like most of the other R Wines, it has exceptionally creative packaging. There will be 100 cases of the 2005 Shiraz which will spend 30 months in new French oak. It was sourced from vineyards with 40- and 100-year-old vines. Opaque purple in color, it offers up an intense perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Voluptuous, thick rich, and full-bodied, it is a powerful yet seamless expression of Shiraz from a great terroir. It will age effortlessly for 20 years but can be enjoyed young because of its mammoth fruit. It is a winemaking tour de force.

Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Longitude 2005 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (99-100)

The intention of Longitude is to be the ultimate expression of Shiraz. The custom patterned bottle (which will change from year to year) costs $100 to produce and it comes in a fancy, one-bottle case which replicates the pattern. Dan Philips and winemaker Chris Ringland believe the 80-year-old parcel of Adrian Hoffman’s Ebenezer vineyard might be the finest in Australia. There are only 500 bottles of the 2005 Shiraz. It was aged for 36-40 months in new French oak hogsheads. Sourced from an 80-year-old parcel, yields were less than 1 ton per acre. Tasted from a barrel sample, the wine is purple/black in color. It boasts an awesome, complex, ethereal perfume of crushed stone, toasty oak, pencil lead, truffle, lavender, blueberry and blackberry. Ripe, sweet, and incredibly powerful yet elegant, this full-bodied, personality-filled wine is as good as it gets. It will have a 50 year lifespan with a very long drinking window.

East-facing, sandy clay and rocky at the bottom. This is a very intense, layered style of wine with complex, rich, suave and sophisticated style. Intense aromas of dark plums, blackberries and spice with brown-pepper and grilled-meat notes. The palate has such dense, supple and long tannins and delivers blackberry, plum and licorice flavors in regal and impressive mode. The power is delivered so smoothly with full commitment to flavor. Wine Advocate (94)

The profound 2005 Shiraz John Zilm was aged in new French and used American oak for 16 months. With an inky/blue/purple color, plenty of purity, richness, and depth as well as notes of incense, blackberries, licorice, pepper, and espresso roast, it offers great presence on the palate, lofty amounts of glycerin, and high alcohol (16%). Drink it over the next decade or more.

D'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2003 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

The wood component was slightly excessive in the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead. Elderton has gotten better over recent years in integrating the wood into their reds, so it was surprising that this wine was dominated by creamy, vanilla milkshake-like flavors that nearly concealed its black currant fruit. With medium to full body, moderate tannin, and a chunky/chubby character, it should age nicely for 7-8 years.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91)

Displaying a similar color as well as personality and depth, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead exhibits a more scorched/roasted character to its nose, sweeter, more pliable and open-knit flavors, and nearly as much aging potential as the cooler vintage conditions produced in 2002. A beautiful, full-throttle, gutsy Cabernet Sauvignon, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-12 years.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

I was also given a peek at the development of the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate. This wine has evolved beautifully, giving pronounced notes of cassis, red cherry and prunes with some spice, coffee and hints of moss and black olives. Full-bodied yet wonderfully elegant and balanced, the tannins here are still quite firm supporting the rich fruit with plenty of acid to enliven. This vintage is delicious now though should continue to cellar to 2016+.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91+)

There was no 2003 produced, but the backward, primary 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead is loaded with potential. Its inky/ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of vanilla, barbecue smoke, roasted meats, creme de cassis, and new leather. This dense, rich, powerful effort requires 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last for 15-20 years.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead is a single vineyard selection aged for 18 months in new French 300-liter barrels (aka hogsheads). It offers up a superb bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso, spice box, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent on the palate, it has gobs of succulent black fruit, well-concealed ripe tannins, impeccable balance, and a long finish. Cellar it for 5-7 years and drink it from 2014 to 2028.

Lurid violet color. Wild, ripe and pungent aromas of dark berries, spicecake, smoke and potpourri; smells like a cult Napa wine. Big, rich and full, with alluring sweetness to the blueberry, blackberry, rose pastille and candied licorice flavors. Spreads out on the back, finishing with penetrating sweetness and substantial but velvety tannins. I could see this wine improving for at least a decade.

While the deep plum/ruby/garnet-tinged 2003 Shiraz Command is slightly less nuanced than the 2002, it is just as powerful and full-bodied, offering copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and muscle. This chewy, rich offering appears to be on a faster evolutionary track than its 2002 counterpart. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 12-15.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2007 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

2007 was a hot, dry, challenging year in the Barossa but the 1894 plantings that go into the Command Shiraz have seen a lot of innings. The roots of these vines go down an estimated 2+ meters, a factor that goes a long way towards stabilizing yields through thick and thin. Still, this was a relatively small vintage producing around 1000 cases. The 2007 Shiraz Command Elderton Estate gives a medium garnet color and very earthy, intense black cherry and blackberry aromas with some loam and iron ore over spice box and espresso, vanilla and licorice. The full-bodied palate is very concentrated juxtaposed by steady crispness and firm fine tannins. This wine is still very youthful with the oak still standing apart in the long layered finish, yet it’s a great example destined for the long haul. Consider drinking it now to 2024+. I was also shown 2 older vintages of the Command Shraz: 2004 and 1992.
