Dominio del Aguila Penas Aladas Gran Reserva 2010 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The great news here is that their first Gran Reserva is about to be released under the name 2010 Peñas Aladas Gran Reserva. It is sourced from small plots of vineyards in a quarter of the Aguilera vineyards, known locally as Peñas Aladas (winged stones?), although the spelling might vary according to the locals you might talk to, where they own some very old vineyards that are surrounded by pine tree forests. The old vineyards have a mixture of grapes, always dominated by Tempranillo, but with others (Cariñena, Bruñal, Bobal, Albillo...) that make up around 15% of the volume of the wine. The full clusters fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and the wine aged slowly for 51 months in oak in a very cold cave where the aging is extremely slow, as the low temperatures (the ideal 12 C all year round) make wines evolve at a glacial pace. The wine was raised in barrel until they felt the tannins had achieved the velvety texture they were looking for. The nose is incredibly perfumed with notes of violets, wild berries and plenty of Asian spices; it is quite heady, properly ripe (without excess), complex and very showy. The palate is velvety but with chalky tannins that cling to your teeth and make it very tasty with an austere minerality. There is great freshness and gobsmacking balance. Believe it or not, this is still a baby that should have a very long life in bottle. 2010 was definitively a great vintage and this wine shows it. Simply superb, fine, elegant Ribera del Duero for the future; I'd love to revisit this in 2023! 1,100 bottles produced. The price has not yet been set. There might also be a small quantity of another single vineyard, Cantalaperdiz, bottled and sold separately in the future. Stay tuned.

Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero Reserva 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2014 Reserva is the winery's flagship wine, a wine produced to showcase the vineyards from the village La Aguilera next to Aranda de Duero in the province of Burgos. It's produced with the field blend dominated by Tempranillo from old vineyards in different parts of the village picked and fermented together. The full clusters were foot trodden and fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and malolactic was very slow (it took eight months in 2014!) in oak vats. The élevage was extended to 31 months in French oak barrels of different sizes and ages. The wine has an herbal twist that provides freshness, and the oak feels very integrated. It has a magical perfume, in a great classical Ribera del Duero, with more body and structure; it has almost the same freshness as the 2013 but with more depth, compensated by complexity. It opens up nicely in the glass. It should age for a very long time in bottle, but it's already approachable. 9,850 bottles and 167 magnums were filled in May 2017.

Hacienda Monasterio Ribera Duero Cosecha Crianza 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The flagship Crianza is now simply referred to as 2015 Hacienda Monasterio. This is their biggest production, with some 181,630 bottles in this classical and powerful vintage where the secret was an early harvest to keep the acidity and freshness in the wine and keep the alcoholic degree under control. It's mostly Tempranillo, with 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, fermented with indigenous yeasts and with long and soft macerations. It matured for some 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of them new (a percentage that has been gradually lowered in the last few years). It has a balanced nose, with nuance and subtleness, with the oak nicely folded into the fruit, incipient perfume, and even if young, you can almost see where it can go in bottle. The foreign varieties are not really noticed; they are very integrated. The palate has terrific balance and refined tannins. There is no heat or excess ripening whatsoever. For a moment, I thought I was tasting the 2014. This is one of the best and most widely available wines from Ribera del Duero. It should evolve nicely in bottle.

Valdaya Mirum Ribera Duero 2018 (6x75cl)

Tim Atkin MW (97)

Valdaya's top red, Mirum, keeps improving with every vintage and is now among the best wines in Ribera del Duero. Made with Tinto Fino from old-vine parcels - Los Bueyes and Las Piedras - in Baños de Valdearodos, it's very much a limestone-influenced style from 925 metres, with subtle wood, chalky minerality, red berry fruit, tension and floral, violet top notes. Long, stylish and beautifully judged. 2022-30

Valsardo Ribera del Duero Reserva Superior 2002 (6x75cl)
HK$1,200.00
2002

Valsardo Ribera del Duero Reserva Superior 2002 (6x75cl) A gorgeous Tempranillo that has been left to slumber in the winery cellar for close to two decades, this ex-winery parcel of Valsardo Ribera del Duero Reserva Superior 2002 is a total no brainer. Showcasing fully integrated, soft and supple tannins, there remains plenty of lovely black fruit with classic gamey and leathery notes alongside its impeccable backbone and freshness. Made without sulphur and at only 12.5% ABV, this blend of 90% Tempranillo, with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, has aged amazing well.

Sourced directly from the winery, this parcel is, in fact, a clearance sale as the winery no longer bottles under its own label, and as such they are selling off all remaining inventory. With the winery now having halted production, this is a piece of Ribera del Duero history.

Vega Sicilia Alion 2011 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2011 Alion is pure Tempranillo from vineyards averaging 25 to 30 years of age, harvested early (second half of September) matured for 16 months in new Nevers barrels (that’s a difference with Vega Sicilia; for Alion all wood is French). It is an exuberant, ripe Alion, with hedonist’s aromas that jump out of the glass. Winemaker Javier Ausas tells me he likes the wines when they are young and showy like this one. It is indeed a showy vintage, with aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff of malt whisky. We tasted the wine a little warm, but that does not benefit the wine, which should be served at 15-16 C and allowed to warm up and open up in the glass. It’s also quite smoky, with reminiscences of very good barrels, black aromas, violets, black olives and fresh plums. The palate is tannic with lactic and warm flavors. This is a very exuberant, showy vintage for Alion, and here I tend to agree with Ausas: even though this has plenty of stuffing to age I’d drink it young in its exuberant phase. 290,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2019.

Vega Sicilia Unico 2006 (3x75cl)

James Suckling (100)

Incredibly floral and beautiful with dark berry, spice, cedar and mint. Chinese plums. Asian spices. Bark. Tea. Full body, dense and so soft and complex. The finish goes on for minutes. Endless and fine. January 2017 release. This reminds me of the gorgeous 1991 or 1964. Drink forever. A wine that you want to spend time with.

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 2016 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2016 Valbuena was produced with a blend of 94% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 6% Merlot from 140 hectares dedicated to this wine. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the first year it matured in barrels (75% French, 25% American) and the second year in large oak vats. This is again a floral and elegant vintage of Valbuena, very much in line with what has happened in the best vintages since 2010. 2016 is going to be a wine that the public is going to like; it has an extroverted personality and is perfumed and generous, juicy and tasty and nicely textured, with fine-grained tannins and very focused and clean flavors. 2016 was a year of very good freshness in Ribera del Duero, a year they like even better than 2018. 182,882 bottles, 6,030 magnums and a few larger formats were produced. It was bottled in June 2019.

Vizcarra Ribera Duero Torralvo 2009 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89)

The 2009 Vizcarra Torralvo comes from Mambrilla de Castrejon from organically grown vines and is aged in new barriques, 95% French and the rest American. It actually handles the oak well and offers attractive notes of kirsch fused with orange blossom on the nose. The palate is rounded and harmonious on the entry with good acidity, leading to a refined, focused finish that suggests some thoughtful winemaking. Drink now-2017.
