Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Anamorphosis 2005 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96-99)

The Anamorphosis project features Shiraz from Kalimna in the Barossa Valley aged in new oak from four of France’s finest coopers. Like most of the other R Wines, it has exceptionally creative packaging. There will be 100 cases of the 2005 Shiraz which will spend 30 months in new French oak. It was sourced from vineyards with 40- and 100-year-old vines. Opaque purple in color, it offers up an intense perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, tar, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Voluptuous, thick rich, and full-bodied, it is a powerful yet seamless expression of Shiraz from a great terroir. It will age effortlessly for 20 years but can be enjoyed young because of its mammoth fruit. It is a winemaking tour de force.

2008

Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Evil Incarnate 2008 (1x150cl) This is sensational with blackberries, blueberries and mineral. Extremely floral, too. Full-bodied but so seamless and refined with polished tannins that just melts into the wine. Goes on for minutes. A subtle and glorious wine that will be a new classic for Napa Valley. An emotional red that touches your soul. Energy. 46% cabernet sauvignon, 31% cabernet franc, 17% petit verdot, and 6% merlot. Very approachable now but better in 2022.

Chris Ringland R Wines Shiraz Longitude 2005 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (99-100)

The intention of Longitude is to be the ultimate expression of Shiraz. The custom patterned bottle (which will change from year to year) costs $100 to produce and it comes in a fancy, one-bottle case which replicates the pattern. Dan Philips and winemaker Chris Ringland believe the 80-year-old parcel of Adrian Hoffman’s Ebenezer vineyard might be the finest in Australia. There are only 500 bottles of the 2005 Shiraz. It was aged for 36-40 months in new French oak hogsheads. Sourced from an 80-year-old parcel, yields were less than 1 ton per acre. Tasted from a barrel sample, the wine is purple/black in color. It boasts an awesome, complex, ethereal perfume of crushed stone, toasty oak, pencil lead, truffle, lavender, blueberry and blackberry. Ripe, sweet, and incredibly powerful yet elegant, this full-bodied, personality-filled wine is as good as it gets. It will have a 50 year lifespan with a very long drinking window.

Wine Advocate (94)

The profound 2005 Shiraz John Zilm was aged in new French and used American oak for 16 months. With an inky/blue/purple color, plenty of purity, richness, and depth as well as notes of incense, blackberries, licorice, pepper, and espresso roast, it offers great presence on the palate, lofty amounts of glycerin, and high alcohol (16%). Drink it over the next decade or more.

Elderton Ode to Lorraine 2014 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90+)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Csm Ode To Lorraine is youthfully mute at this early stage, offering a glimpse at blackberry and black currant notes with touches of tree bark, espresso, bay leaves and black pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is taut with a good core of fresh, primary black fruits supported by firm, chewy tannins and finishing with gentle herbal notes.

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2004 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

Still looking fresh and complete, Glaetzer's 2004 Amon Ra Shiraz is full-bodied, rich and dark-fruited, with black cherry and plum fruit forming the base, while grace notes of baking spices, mocha and cedar play about the edges. Creamy and velvety in texture, with a long finish, it remains at its peak and should continue to drink well for another decade or more.

Deep garnet in color, the 2005 Amon-Ra displays aromas of pure black currant cordial, dark chocolate, violets and toast with a hint of raw meat and touch of Indian spices. Full-bodied with a taut and muscular frame defined by firm grainy tannins, it is still very youthful and offers fresh, crisp acid that retains nice vibrancy through the long finish. Very deep purple-black in color, the 2012 Amon Ra reveals intense notes of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry compote and licorice with nuances of cloves, allspice, chocolate box and salami as well as a whiff of espresso. The 100% Shiraz palate offers a beast of a wine that is densely packed with black fruit and baking spice flavors and is supported with firm, grainy tannins and crisp acid through to a finish with excellent persistence. 2018

Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

Certainly one of the best vintages of young Amon Ra I've ever tasted, the 2018 Amon Ra Shiraz is a stupendous effort. From old vines in the Ebenezer section of the northern Barossa, it starts off with a whirlwind of mocha, blackberry and dried spices, then actually gets more red-fruited as it sits in the glass. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated without being jammy or overdone, the wine finishes long and savory, framed by dusty tannins and mouthwatering black olives. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer compares 2018 to 2004 (which continues to drink well). Expect the 2018 to drink well young, but easily age through 2035, perhaps longer.

Glaetzer Anaperenna 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

For the 2018 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Glaetzer blended in 18% Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine increased fragrance and length. The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar- and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture.

Wine Advocate (92)

Medium garnet colored, 2004 Abednego Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre gives evolved aromas of spice cake, dates, fig paste, leather, tobacco and an earthy undercurrent of damp loam and underbrush. Medium to full bodied with firm fine tannins and refreshing acidity, this is a balanced and elegant style for this blend. Mature and drinking well now, it should continue to cellar to 2018.

Greenock Creek Alice's Shiraz 2006 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91+)

The 2006 Shiraz Alices is more dense and saturated than the Seven Acre cuvee. It exhibits a brooding nose of smoke, lavender, damp earth, game, and blueberry. Firm and a bit closed down on the palate, this structured effort is still tightly wound and will require extended cellaring of 6-8 years. It seems to have all the right stuff to ultimately reveal its full potential but time will tell.

Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road Shiraz 2005 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2005 Roennfeldt Road Shiraz is very deep purple-black in color. It presents and incredible array of pronounced spice, earth, floral and savory aromas: blackberry preserves, dried mulberries, coffee, grilled duck, vanilla, cloves, fenugreek, violets and dried rose petals plus some shavings of dark chocolate. Very full and very rich in the mouth, at 17.5% declared alcohol this is not a wine for the faint hearted. Though youthful it’s already multi-layered and the opulent flesh is well supported by a good backbone of crisp acid and a high level of velvety tannins. The finish is very, very long. This Shiraz has great balance for the alcohol and although the wine leaves a bit of heat in the finish it neither overpowers nor detracts from the layers of complex flavors. Possessing the foundation and stuffing to age, it should drink well from 2014 to 2025+.

Wine Advocate (85)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Johann Shiraz Cabernet has an open, expressive cassis and blackberry tart scented nose with a cedary background and hints of baker's chocolate and yeast extract. The oak slightly overshadows the relatively elegant, medium-bodied fruit core, finishing with chewy tannins and lingering wood flavors. It would actually be an impressive wine were it not for the clumsy oak usage.

James Halliday (91)

A wine full of contradictions, given a luxury bottle, and a long cork that has emerged contorted, reflecting the interior of the neck of the bottle. The ominously high alcohol is in fact balanced to a large degree by good acidity and low pH seems to reflect some winery adjustment. All of this is framed by oak in the long-established Irvine style.

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2015 Old Bastard Shiraz, from vines planted in 1893, boasts ethereal aromas of menthol, licorice, blueberries and roasted meat. It's a big, full-bodied wine, yet it comes across as lighter than expected, with a fluid, silky feel on the palate and a bright, peppery finish. A wine of seeming contradictions, it's concentrated but lively, ripe yet crisp, savory and fruity, and loaded up front while being long on the finish. It should drink well for over a decade.

It's a full-bodied but balanced Shiraz, with big blueberry and blackberry flavors but also savory hints of wood, grilled meat and dried spices. Ochota Barrels From the North Mourvedre 2018 (6x75cl)

James Halliday (95)

I love Mourvedre and its growl of ferrous tannin; its timbre of dried tobacco, ironstone and dark fruit references. All there, this is a more vivid, mid-weight expression with less rustic grunt and more sheen of fruit. At a mere 12.8% alcohol, a blend of fruit across different harvest windows, there is no sacrifice of the sense of overall ripeness as in the past. Deliciously supple, plump and bouncy across the mouth with a whirr of sarsaparilla-soused freshness to conclude.
