Halliday Wine Companion (98)Top 100 Wines of 2021 The clarity, the purity, the elegance and the perfume that the Upper Yarra Valley Applejack Vineyard brings to the party is immediately recognisable. Equally insistent is the sheer power of the red fruits and spices hidden by the light colour of the cloak. 66 barrels/barriques. |

Halliday Wine Companion (95)Whole-bunched pressed into older French puncheons. Natural fermentation and zero mlf. A super-bright green gold. Vibrant aromas with perfectly ripened stone fruits, grapefruit pith and an attractive touch of lemongrass and ginger. Gently textured, balanced and satisfying. A class act from beginning to end. |

Halliday Wine Companion (96)60/40% upper/lower Yarra Valley fruit. Hand picked and open-fermented with 60% whole berries, the remainder whole bunches. A very bright, light–medium crimson red. A gentle waft of fresh raspberries and cranberries, with just the right amount of spice-rack spices. Delicious right out of the gate, this medium-bodied and refreshing wine will age well too. The perfect introduction to modern Yarra pinot. |

Halliday Wine Companion (99)Stands proudly at the head of the Mount Mary portfolio. A blend of 44% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 16% cabernet franc and 5% each of malbec and petit verdot, each variety handled according to its structure. Open/static fermenters, wood/stainless steel, 10-14 days on skins, 35% new oak from a range of coopers and forests, 16-20 months in barrel. Mesmerisingly silky, with a kaleidoscope of fruit and secondary flavours. |

Vinous (96)From the Coal and Derwent Valleys (Tas) and the Adelaide Hills; Handpicked and pressed to French barriques (62% new, 38% 1yo) for 8 months. The wine is so precise and tightly wound it is hard to imagine it went through 100% mlf, but at the same time, the decision to limit the amount of new oak falls neatly into place. It is developing at such a leisurely pace it is hard to visualise an end point. Gun flint, wet stone, green apple and grapefruit are among the contributors to the seamless flavour stream. |

James Suckling (98)A much-anticipated vintage for Yattarna and it does not disappoint, showing very impressive depth and sheer fruit power. It has devoured the oak, there's a deep citrusy core to the palate that really hinges on yellow grapefruit. It teases with subtle bitterness in a way that a great chef fine tunes a great dish, sapid, dense and very very assertive. Drink now. |

Halliday Wine Companion (95)One of the most daring releases of recent times, not so much for its blend of shiraz, pinot noir and sauvignon blanc as its bold shot at 100% whole bunch fermentation in the cold, wet '11, from a vineyard so run down it almost didn't crop at all. Bill Downie has worked his magic to create a hauntingly ethereal wine of internal harmony, silky structure and captivating exoticism. |

Halliday Wine Companion (92)Old-school Coonawarra wrapped within a sheath of contemporary tannin management. Smoother, perhaps, but the region's green olive scented tannins, sinewy and edgy, are strongly genetic. Otherwise, currant, bay leaf and an herbaceous undercarriage of mint, clove and bouquet garni push across a persistent linger. |

Andrew Caillard MW (100)Deep crimson. Lovely pure blackcurrant elderberry herb garden aromas with hints of espresso/ roasted chestnut notes. Beautiful concentrated wine with blackcurrant elderberry chinotto herb flavours, fine-grained and plentiful yet vigorous tannins, superb mid palate richness and integrated roasted chestnut/ cedar oak notes. Finishes chalky firm with a long inky/ graphite plume. Made for the long haul. Powerfully expressive yet unforced wine with superb vinosity, richness, density and volume. Superb. The fruit derives from the V&A (Victoria & Albert) and Nursery Vineyards, both located on classic terra rossa soils. From a dry, mild to warm growing season. Wait a few years to let it unfold, 2025-2050. |

Bob Campbell MW (97)Marries elegance with depth and power, elegance controlling the union. Whereas oak is often very obvious in young Michael releases, here it is just a veneer for the supple plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits, the tannins likewise perfectly pitched. Coonawarra didn't miss out on the great '12 vintage. |

Wine Advocate (92+)A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, the 2012 Agincourt possesses a deep garnet-purple color and notes of crushed blackberries, black cherries and blueberries with hints of violets, pencil lead and Provence herbs. Light to medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully structured with firm, fine-grained tannins and great freshness plus enough muscular fruit to flesh out this modestly weighted wine. It finishes with great length. |

Wine Advocate (92)Opening with a gorgeous, white blossom-laced perfume, the 2012 Carrodus Viognier is scented of peach blossoms, frangipani and spiced pears with suggestions of baker's year and acacia honey. Medium to full-bodied and wonderfully concentrated on the palate, it gives tons of honeyed and spiced stone-fruit flavors with just enough acidity to lift this creamy textured wine to a long finish. |
