Wine Advocate (95)From Tuscan winemaker Carlo Ferrini, who shares deep love for Sicily, the Alberelli di Giodo 2022 Nerello Mascalese (a production of 9,000 bottles all with a red wax capsule) is one of the best made wines from the volcano on the market today. Carlo Ferrini's signature touch adds an extra layer of dark fruit concentration and sweet spice. Indeed, the wine ages in 500- and 700-liter barrels for 18 months. Fruit comes from a 1.9-hectare site with 50- to 80-year-old plants at 560 to 850 meters in elevation on the north side of Etna. The tannins are expertly managed, and although you feel that firm structure, there is enough dark fruit to smooth it all out, giving the wine depth and power. |

The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot) has a dense, fruit-driven bouquet that does not possess the detail of Rousseau's Chambertin 2012. Wild strawberry mingles with cranberry and dried orange peel notes that gain intensity in the glass, but not quite the precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, citrus fresh in the mouth with touches of blood orange. Perhaps the true quality of this wine is unveiled because it is far superior than the recalcitrant nose. There is a touch of bitterness on the finish, but that merely lends this Chambertin tension. Extraordinarily long and vital, this was one of the huge surprises of the blind tasting. |

The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannin, layers of crisp red cherry and raspberry fruit sprinkled with white pepper and clove. This builds nicely in the mouth and it fans out gloriously, whereas the Charmes-Chambertin remains recalcitrant and linear. This is superb. |

Very lithe and fresh, leading to a delineated finish that ranks alongside many others I have tasted. This is a superb Chambertin that will age with style. |

This is a powerful but balanced effort that offers genuinely outstanding length and is unapologetically built to age. |
