One of my wines of the vintage in 2015, this is the best release yet from this joint venture between Domains Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family, launched in 2000. Combining Malbec with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley, but with some support from Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo, it's a stunningly complex wine, which marries the richness of Argentinian flavours with the finesse and nuance of a top Left Bank Bordeaux. The fruit is bright and luminous, the oak scented and well integrated, the tannins silky and caressing. What a red! 2020-30.HK$1,900.00 -

The cedary nose of the 2016 Caro transported me to the wines from Bordeaux, and the explanation might be because the blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec—the highest percentage of Cabernet in the history of Caro. This has very good complexity; it feels young (Cabernet tends to develop at a slower pace than Malbec), even though it matured in 100% new oak the oak is very integrated. The barriques are only produced by the Lafite barrel makers, and there is great care in the selection of the wood and the toast; the barrels are designed to produce a more elegant style of wine, subtle and harmonious, with a notable absence of toasted and smoky aromas. This wine is polished and sleek, but there is nice balance to develop nicely in bottle for a good decade. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2017.HK$2,300.00 -

This is one of the most direct and clear Caros in a long time with blue-fruit, violet and sandalwood aromas and flavors. Crushed-stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and contracted with a level of shyness to its strength. The length derives from the excellence of the cabernet. One for the cellar. Blend of 74% malbec and 26% cabernet sauvignon. Try after 2023, but exciting to drink all the same.HK$1,795.00 -

Combining the considerable talents of Fernando Buscema and Philippe Rolet (the former made the wine, the latter did the blend), Caro is one of the wines of the vintage in 2018. Paraje Altamira is the source of this finely judged cuvée of Malbec and 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 80% new wood. Subtle, graceful and perfumed, it’s a wine that carries its structure and concentration lightly, with graphite, cassis and blueberry fruit, fresh acidity and harmonious, caressing tannins. Superb stuff.HK$2,460.00 -

A very impressive red in its own right. Malbec-based with 34% Cabernet Sauvignon for company, followed by ageing in 50% new wood, it’s an inky, structured, nuanced pan-Mendoza blend, showing plum, blackberry and cassis flavours and firm, ageworthy tannins.HK$2,365.00 -

The 2021 CARO, 79% Malbec and 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-purple in color. It soars from the glass with expressive notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and licorice with hints of candied violets and spice cake. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with perfumed black fruits, framed by super-ripe, super-plush tannins and tantalizing freshness, finishing very long and fragrant. This is an impressive showing for this joint venture between Lafite Rothschild and Nicolas Catena.HK$2,565.00 -

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Featuring a deep garnet-purple color, it sashays out of the glass with gregarious notions of baked plums, warm cassis and blueberry compote with suggestions of kirsch, dusty soil and Indian spices. The palate is full-bodied and laden with bright, lively, energetic black fruits, supported with firm, super ripe tannins and finishing on a persistent exotic spice note. 500 cases were made.HK$11,395.00 -

The 2019 Chardonnay UV Vineyard is beautiful, just a clean, pure, impeccably balanced white that does everything right. Notes of white currants, stone fruits, chalky minerality, and white flowers all define the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, elegant mouthfeel, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It shows a more open, supple style compared to previous vintages yet should still have 4-6 years of prime drinking if stored correctly.HK$4,280.00 -

From above the Dalla Valle vineyard in Oakville emerges the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard (160 cases). This is a 25-year wine for sure and a rather classic Oakville, with notes of Pauillac-like cedariness, Christmas fruitcake, crème de cassis, licorice and pen ink. It is full-bodied, dense, moderately tannic and for 2014 probably better in 2-3 years time, although certainly has the depth and richness and overall equilibrium to age for 20-25 years.HK$10,170.00 -

This was the first 100-point wine from here with such aromas of fresh herbs and dark berry and floral undertones. Hot stone character. Full body, very linear and ultra-fine tannins. The precision and perfection here is impressive, as it has always been. A blend of carmenere, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Drink or hold.HK$4,445.00 -
James Suckling (99)
This is really focused and refined with fantastic dried flowers and dark berries. Dried-lavender and mint undertones. Medium-to full-bodied with refined and polished tannins that are all together and so focused. Really integrated and melted together on the palate. Compact and very linear. Please give this two or three years to come completely together, but it’s already breathtaking. Better to drink after 2022.HK$4,265.00 -

What a stunning nose of crushed berries, fresh flowers, sandalwood and light vineyard dust. Black olives, too. Very complex. Full-bodied with a beautiful, dense palate of blackberries, chocolate, walnuts and cigar box. Fantastic length and composure. The tannin just rolls over the palate. Very structured. The most classically structured wine ever from here. Goes on for minutes. Outrageous and so polished. A blend of 48% carmenere, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Try after 2025.HK$4,790.00 -

So aromatic and fresh with dried flowers, sweet tobacco and hints of straw. Red fruit, cloves and green peppercorns. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins that are very fresh and refined. Fine, silky and beautiful. Hints of minerals and granite to the dark fruit. Such gorgeous length and beauty. 64% carmenere, 18% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. Extremely long and poised. Cooler wine. From biodynamically grown grapes. Delicious to drink already, but another three to four years will make it even better.HK$4,210.00 -
James Suckling (99)
A generous array of ripe black and blue fruit with pink peppercorns, green olives, dried flowers, toffee and chocolate orange. It’s full-bodied with firm, creamy and velvety tannins. Long and polished. Lovely salted caramel and olives at the end. Keeps going. Unfolds on the finish. 70% carmenere, 18% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot. Drink or hold.HK$4,530.00 -

Vinous (93)
The 2004 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard was sourced from Gualtallary and aged for 24 months in oak barrels. With a dark brick hue, it presents aromas of black fruit, dried figs and wild herbs, alongside ripe and evolved notes. Rich and indulgent, it offers a compact, juicy palate with a long and complex finish. This is a textured wine with a balanced character (14% alcohol content, pH of 3.55) that enhances its calibrated evolution.HK$1,680.00 -
Vinous (92+)
Full ruby-red. Musky dark fruits and bitter chocolate on the brooding nose, with a strong kirsch note emerging with aeration. Powerful and deep but youthfully closed, with terrific grip to the flavors of cassis, dark chocolate and minerals. Quite closed and young today, but with its fine-grained tannins and slowly building persistence this single-vineyard malbec appears to be built for a positive evolution in bottle.HK$7,210.00 -

The awesome 2010 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard turned out to be one of my favorite wines of all that I tasted from Argentina, a wine that has me daydreaming of Gualtallary and the amazing Adrianna vineyard which is also the source of the superb White Bones and White Stones Chardonnays. Here the Malbec, grown at 1,480 meters above sea level in the Tupungato quarter of the Uco Valley, in the commune of Gualtallary where the soils are rich in calcium carbonate, is co-fermented with a little (7%) Viognier from that very same vineyard. It produces a sappy, tasty, umami-driven wine that has very high acidity (almost citric), 6.5 grams of it – so you might not like this wine if you prefer low acidity ones. It is austere and straight, but it packs quite a punch. The nose is somehow reticent, but it slowly displays floral notes and aromas of ripe fruit, some spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is also austere and straight, a very mineral wine, with a texture and an electricity akin to licking a chalky stone. This is a wine to age, very concentrated, with high natural acidity. It is a soil wine, not a fruit wine. It needs time in bottle. Drink 2016-2022.HK$5,015.00 -

There are three separate bottling from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae, from the shallow and limestone soils with a south-facing, cold exposure, that was coupled by a cool year. This has higher acidity and citric, effervescent acidity combined with chalky tannins providing length and freshness. This is terrific. 2,000 bottles were filled in December 2015.HK$5,340.00 -

I tasted three consecutive vintages of the reds from Adrianna Vineyard, including the luxury cuvée, starting with the 2014 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae. It is from the coolest year since 2001 (but cooler will come in 2016), and it has 13.5% alcohol and very high acidity—7.5 grams measured in tartaric acid. What that all means is it's moderately ripe and very fresh, with integrated oak after fermenting in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels and an élevage of 24 months in oak. 4,200 bottles were filled in July 2016.HK$10,775.00 -

This is a phenomenal malbec with intense blue fruits such as blueberries and blackberries. Black truffle, too. Full-bodied, bright and juicy with fantastic power and richness. Yet the acidity just keeps going. Volcanic salt and white peppers. A thoroughly breathtaking wine. Try after 2020.HK$4,880.00
