Americas
The North American wine producing reputation can largely be attributed to the global fame and success of Napa Valley and Sonoma County in the United States. Although technically ‘new world’, its wines have the same devoted fan base (and often first-growth prices) as many classic European wines. Free from the shackles of European winemaking law, one can find a variety of cooler climate Cabs, Merlots, Pinots, Chardonnays and Rieslings that will entice all wine lovers.
South America is an exciting new melting pot of styles and flavours with a range of soils types and altitudes – taking international varietals and finishing with French winemaking techniques, or in the case of Argentinian Malbec, adopting a largely unloved grape and making it their own.

The 2012 Le Desir (64% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec) reminds me of a young vintage of Ausone, such as 2005. The wine has amazing minerality and an explosive blueberry nose intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, charcoal and camphor. It is full-bodied, with espresso notes emerging on the palate. There are 1,900 cases of this super-endowed, prodigious wine that should drink well for 35-40 years. How fun it would be for mega-millionaires to put this in a blind tasting of a great vintage of Ausone in 10, 20 or 30 years from now.HK$7,375.00 -

The 2013 Le Desir represents 2,500 cases. This is the softest of the three wines in 2013, and this blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 23% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec emerges with more than half of the cuvée coming from Hillsides in Alexander Valley, 37% from Chalk Hill and the rest tiny dollops from Bennett Valley and Knights Valley. Opaque purple, like its siblings, the wine is showing incredible floral, blueberry and espresso notes, exotic Asian spices, velvety texture, a supple, multilayered mouthfeel and incredible finish, with incense and licorice. This is magnificent young wine, with a good 40-50 years of upside potential. Pierre Seillan is justifiably proud of what he has achieved, and his first vintage of Vérité was only 1998, but they go from strength to strength.HK$11,385.00 -

The 2014 Le Désir (53% Cabernet Franc, 21% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec) has an inky purple color and a sweet kiss of chocolate, black truffle, forest floor, black raspberry and black currants. Opulent, but again structured and super-dense and pure, this is another massively concentrated wine meant for the long haul (and for our grandchildren). Give it 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 35-40 years. Remarkably, Pierre Seillan told me that 2014, while a drought year, was not actually that hot in the micro-terroirs he was working, but in terms of quality, it turned out to be the most surprisingly positive vintage he’s ever witnessed.HK$5,065.00 -

The 2016 Le Desir checks in as 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and 6% Malbec. Readers looking for world-class Cabernet Franc should beg, borrow, or steal to get hold of a bottle of this. Incredible floral, violet, forest floor, lead pencil, and cassis notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that’s flawlessly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. More intellectual and elegant than the La Joie, it’s still a wine of incredible intensity and class that builds incrementally on the palate, has an exotic, singular character, and the class to evolve for 30 years or more.HK$7,990.00 -

The 2019 Le Desir is based on Cabernet Franc, with the remainder 8% Merlot, 5% Malbec, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is complex and layered, with hints of saddle leather, pencil shavings, tangy red cherry, and blackcurrant. The palate is full and elegantly structured, with mocha, red plum, and turned soil. This is an incredible wine with lots of underlying tension that will be a pleasure to revisit if afforded the opportunity. Drink over the next 20 or more years.HK$3,640.00 -

There were 32 barrels of the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley produced. It’s a great wine, offering full-bodied richness and depth in a rich, concentrated, satisfying package. Classic Cabernet notes of cassis, tobacco, and chocolate all emerge from the glass, and it has ripe tannins, no hard edges, and the purity that’s the hallmark of the vintage front and center. A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, enjoy bottles any time over the coming 20 years or more.HK$6,590.00 -
Offering a veritable kaleidoscope of ripe cassis, blackberries and black liquorice with underlying darker notes of tobacco and spices, Spinning Plates 2019 is loaded with pliant fruit and a generously silky structure which promises nothing but an exceptional future for those able to resist the lure of perfectly ripe youthful fruit. Kept a secret even from the critics, this is a true cult wine which has already sold over 80% of the 800 cases made to the domestic US mailing-list.

Intense graphite with fresh lavender, thyme, rosemary and blackcurrant notes. Hints of decadence. Iodine and mussel undertones. Full-bodied with superb intensity and silky tannins that grow on the palate, showing great length that goes on for minutes. Truly great depth. 77% cabernet franc and 23% cabernet sauvignon. Best ever. 4,800 cases made. This needs five to seven years to come together. Drink from 2029.HK$5,035.00 -

A compact and polished Cobos with lots of dark fruit, as well as green olives, flowers and stems. Raspberries and forest fruit, too. Full-bodied, very tight and compressed. Melted tannins give great presence and mouth-feel, but the feeling is that they are invisible. It goes on for minutes. Sensational. So sophisticated and thoughtful. An archetypal malbec from Argentina. Better after 2027.HK$4,920.00 -

At only 400 cases, the first version of the 2021 Malbec Cobos was created in 1999 from grapes in Lujan de Cuyo from the first grower estate Hobbs worked with, next to what is now the Hobbs Estate. The grapes now come from the Hobbs Estate in Lujan and the Chanares Estate in Valle de Uco. Separate lots are fermented 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, resulting in an outstandingly delicious, memorable, and complex layering of soft texture, floral violet, and high-toned blueberry and blackberry fruit. The structure is formidable, but ultimately there's something very ethereal and brooding about this wine that makes it stand out most of all. Aging potential is 20-30 years, if not more.HK$4,790.00 -
Vinous (93+)
(14.8% alcohol; from ten-year-old vines on sandy soil with a lot of big stones; aged in 65% new oak; Vignoni describes this as a more rustic site surrounded by countryside, with a lot of native herb influence; production was just three tons per hectare in 2015). Saturated ruby. Very primary nose dominated by a stony quality. Highly concentrated and extremely primary, offering flavors of blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, wild herbs and lightly fusel crushed rock (Vignoni described this note as water on hot rocks). Finishes with an impression of medicinal reserve and slowly building length. This juicy but youthfully imploded wine, which carries a relatively low pH of 3.4, finishes firmly tannic and needs time to expand in the bottle. There's no easy sweetness here.HK$1,140.00 -

(14.5% alcohol): Bright full ruby. Sexy, higher-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mocha and leather convey a distinctly wild element. Complex, soil-inflected flavors of dark berries, leather, coffee and mocha. Sweet, suave, highly concentrated wine with a silky texture and firm but ripe, harmonious tannins. Another couple years of bottle aging should be rewarded.HK$2,935.00 -
