Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

|
Burgundy | - | 90-93 (BH) | HK$3,845.00
Burghound (90-93)(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaring |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)A bright mid purple. This is still in barrel and is not yet showing much nose. There is a fine concentration of a sweetly ripe plum and raspberry fruit. Comes from the Vosne side plus some purchases in Premeaux. A fine and elegant finish for Nuits. Drink from 2030-2036. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)A rich bright purple. High class fruit on the nose, not allowing the oak to get in the way. The palate currently shows a slight dry patch, probably wood tannins, which I am sure the fruit will overcome – indeed the quality of this dark raspberry fruit is exuberant and high class at the same time. We will need to wait for it, but I would be really surprised if this doesn’t work. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)Fresh purple with some intensity. A little bit of wood on the nose, and a fruit which suggests that it needs more elevage. Quite strict despite the mix of pure red and tending to black fruit. Medium plus intensity, severe at the moment, I have no problem with that, especially as there is clearly potential. Drink from 2031-2039. Tasted: December 2023. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with mineral-driven citrus fruit and hints of honeysuckle developing in the glass. The palate is very well-balanced with a sapid entry. A little resinous in texture, there is plenty of extract, underlying the complex, stem ginger and lemon thyme-tinged finish. Give this plenty of bottle age, and there is very good potential. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has an intense, minerally bouquet with touches of chalk, yellow plum and light blood orange aromas. The palate is well-balanced, one of Bouzereau's more powerful cuvées with impressive persistence and a sapid aftertaste. The pedigree of the terroir really comes through in this Meursault. |

|
|
Burgundy | - | 92-94 (VN (NM)) | HK$10,400.00
Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a typical Perrières bouquet with crushed rock/flint percolating through the veneer of slightly tropical fruit. It takes time to settle in the glass. The palate is harmonious with bright acidity, a much more elegant style of Perrières with a creamy finish that lingers in the mouth. That build in the mouth is deeply impressive, although it retains composure and finesse from start to finish. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)An attractive racy pale primrose. The bouquet is fully of energy, this is not too heavy a Charmes, but a fine one. The palate offers an excellent weight of fruit, ripe apples, a little fresh plum, very good grip and a long finish. Smart stuff! |

Vinous (90-92)The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, matured in 20% new oak, has quite an engaging bouquet, with hints of wild fennel and mint infusing citrus fruit. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Linear in style, there is no peacock's tail towards the finish, but plenty of spiciness, a touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the aftertaste. Recommended. |
