Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Michelot Meursault-Genevrieres 1er Cru 2022 is a white Burgundy from Meursault, France, sourced from the celebrated Genevrières premier cru slope, prized for its combination of richness and mineral drive. Domaine Michelot is a long-established Meursault family estate, known in leading Burgundy references for meticulous viticulture and transparent élevage that prioritises site character. The 2022 captures the hallmark Genevrières profile: ripe orchard fruit and citrus oil layered over crushed-stone and subtle floral notes, with a deep, saline finish. In the cellar, the domaine’s approach typically favours careful pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and maturation in French oak, with measured new wood to frame rather than dominate. Expect a concentrated yet poised palate, glossy texture, and the tension to evolve gracefully in bottle. |

Burghound (93)Airy, cool and high-toned aromas include those of violet, lilac, rose petal, herbal tea and various wild red berry scents. There is fine volume, richness and energy to the equally broad-shouldered and mineral-driven flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere, compact and impressively long finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Patience is once again advised as this is pretty tightly wound at present. |

Burghound (92)(2021 was the first vintage). This is also attractively spicy with its ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, rose petal and whiff of exotic tea. The exceptionally rich and caressing middle weight flavors exhibit fine power on the, palate coating and lingering finish where touches of warmth and wood appear. This acceptably concentrated effort offers solid quality but it’s not the best here in 2022. |

Decanter (95)The Cazetiers is the second premier cru introduced by Millemann with the 2022 vintage. There are firmer tannins than the Champeaux, but the fruit is more expressive. Luckily, Millemann has sourced enough for four barrels of this delicious wine. The grapes are fermented mostly as whole clusters, which are fermented on native yeasts and trod briefly just at the end of the fermentation. The finished wine is barreled down into new wood and aged over two winters before being racked into wine globes and bottled without filtration. |

Burghound (91)(2021 was the first vintage). Here too there is just enough reduction to push the otherwise layered aromas of cool red and black cherry, plum, violet, lavender, herbal tea to the background The delicious, vibrant and more refined middle weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel as well as focused power that suffuses the youthfully austere and compact finale that delivers fine length. This is on the lighter side for Latricières, but even so, it’s one that is going to require at least moderate patience. |

Burghound (92)Much like the Ile de Vergelesses, there is just enough reduction to blur the nuances of the fruit. The mouthfeel of the middleweight flavors is finer if less powerful than those of the Cazetiers while delivering solid length on the mineral-driven finish that displays excellent length on the well-balanced finale. This mildly austere effort should repay at least a decade of cellaring. In a word, lovely. |
