Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Henri Prudhon Puligny Montrachet Enseigneres 2022 is a classic white Burgundy from France, Burgundy, Puligny-Montrachet, drawn from the lieu-dit Enseignères—widely regarded as a fine, well-sited parcel on the outskirts of the grand cru slope. Domaine Henri Prudhon is a long-established, family-run address in the village, known for restrained, terroir-faithful wines that privilege clarity over excess. The 2022 vintage delivers Puligny’s signature architecture: precise citrus and orchard fruit, white flowers, crushed stone and subtle hazelnut, with a cool, saline line that tightens the finish. Expect measured oak influence—supportive rather than dominant—allowing the mineral core and chalky texture to take centre stage. Poised yet concentrated, it will reward cellaring as its youthful tension evolves into layered savour and nuance. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)A fine bright purple. The nose is solid and concentrated, in a forward style of raspberry fruit. There is a wealth of fruit on the palate though not as seductive as Clos St-Denis can be, but all in balance and with an agreeably long finish. A really sensible, poised, approach to winemaking. 80% whole bunch vinification hardly shows, while 50% new oak feels about right. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2023. |

Burghound (88)An even fresher nose freely offers up its array of green apple, plenty of citrus elements and a hint of mineral reduction. The racy, detailed and sleek medium weight flavors are wonderfully refreshing but not quite as complex on the stony, bone-dry and lightly austere finale. A year or two of cellaring should help to add depth. |

Burghound (89)(mostly from Prissé). This is the first wine to display even subtle wood influence on the smoky white orchard fruit and more discreet citrus-infused nose. There is more volume if perhaps slightly less delineation to the medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate balance on the clean, long and more complex finale. Fine quality here. |

Burghound (90)A more restrained nose is comprised by aromas of white peach, citrus confit and acacia blossom. There is excellent density to the succulent and saliva-inducing middle weight flavors that possess an appealing underlying tension while exhibiting a lovely salinity on the solidly persistent, youthfully austere and satisfying complex finish. This too offers fine quality. |

Wine Advocate (95)Over the last five years, as these high density plantings (which date to 2014) mature, this cuvée has made the most progress of any wine in the range, and the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées only confirms that.
