Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." A discreet if easily discernible dollop of wood is present on the spicy nose of wild red berries that are nuanced by hints of the sauvage, spice and newly turned earth. The succulent and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess better mid-palate density thanks to the old vine sap that also serves to buffer the punchy, saline and firm finale. This is also a very good Gevrey villages and one to consider if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a few years. |

This slightly firmer effort is also quite good for its level and also worth a look. |
