The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an inviting, warm and enveloping bouquet that seems to surround the senses and give them a big hug. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, animated citrus fruit underlying the black cherries and wild strawberry notes. There is really quite wonderful precision and focus on the finish. This is one of Jadot's best 2013s.

Surprisingly sweet, rich and pliant on the palate but with strong acidity that hasn't yet integrated with the wine's fruit. Concentrated, saline wine with a very long finish. It just seems to grow in stature. The palate is extremely well balanced with firm backbone, great density with a muscular, quite grippy finish. It just gives you everything you want from a Richebourg. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.'s annual Burgundy tasting in London.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet that is quintessential Charmes-Chambertin really. It is very well defined and pure with small dark cherries, blueberry and iris scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin structure, a citric thread of acidity and an austere and serious finish that is more Morey-like in style. There is a lovely sense of salinity on the aftertaste that begs you to take another sip. I actually prefer this to the Clos-de-la-Roche this year.

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which will contain some new oak although I tasted from a used barrel, has a tightly knit bouquet that at the moment is less expressive than the Mazis-Chambertin. The palate is crisp and pure, quite tensile, with a spiciness that becomes more prominent toward the fleshy, harmonious finish. Curiously, even from a used barrel the texture feels as if there is some new oak, but that is just the concentration of fruit coming through. Frédéric enthused about this wine and I suspect that it may surpass my expectations once in bottle.

Once again, 2013 was a difficult vintage for the winemakers of Burgundy, but those who were patient and meticulous produced wines of excellent quality. The spring was cold and wet which led to late and uneven flowering. Conditions worsened with a hailstorm in late July which hit areas of Savigny, Beaune, Volnay and Meursault in particular, but a warm and dry August helped fruit to ripen at a critical time. The best of the white wines are truly exceptional in 2013 due to their refreshing acidity which perfectly balanced the impressive purity of of fruit. While the reds were overall less acclaimed than the whites, they showed elegance and sheer drinkability due to their freshness and depth of fruit.
