Haut-Médoc
Haut-Médoc is a world-renowned wine region located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, home to some of the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world. The Haut-Médoc appellation covers a vast area of about 4,600 hectares, stretching from the outskirts of Bordeaux to the tip of the Médoc peninsula, and encompassing some of the most iconic appellations in Bordeaux, such as Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe. These actually account for the majority of the wines produced within the Haut-Médoc and have their own AOC. The more general title is used for vineyards lying outside these communes.
The wines of Haut-Médoc are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential, and are made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grapes. The terroir of Haut-Médoc is characterized by gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and reflect the sunlight, producing grapes with intense flavors and aromas.

The 2014 La Lagune has a tightly wound bouquet that may have closed down since I last tasted it. It begins to open with blackberry, graphite and wet limestone scents, quite strict and focused, but very well defined and showing great clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and density with a little chalkiness showing towards the second half. I like the tension and energy, lingering long in the mouth. It will need several years in bottle but it will be worth the wait. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.HK$3,560.00 -

The 2017 La Lagune is powerful and dense, but also a bit rough around the edges. Tobacco, game, licorice, smoke and dried flowers along with big, coarse tannins give the 2017 its decidedly hearty feel. Even so, there is quite a bit of complexity and plenty of personality. The 2017 is not exactly finessed, but it has a lot going on. The 2017 needs time to come together, but it is promising, that is for sure.HK$2,185.00 -

Probably La Tour Carnet’s best since their 2001, the 2010 La Tour Carnet exhibits wonderful ripeness, a dense ruby/purple color, notes of licorice, camphor and some toast as well as lots of black currant and blueberry fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, with attractive sweetness of tannin, good acidity, excellent delineation to its component parts, and a full-bodied, impressively long finish. This wine may close down somewhat, given the moderate tannins, but it seems relatively accessible despite being a 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035.HK$1,960.00 -

The construction and the architecture feel more like 2010 and 2016 than many of its peers in 2018. It's a good wine that's clearly going to age exceptionally well. It has notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, dark chocolate, liquorice and black pepper. It has layers of complexity and enough acidity to rein in the exuberance. Note, as ever, that the bottle is the heaviest of the line up - a shame when he is doing so much work to reduce environmental impact. 40hl/ha yield. Ageing is in 33% new oak.HK$2,955.00 -
