Vinous - Antonio Galloni (86-89)
The 2014 La Fleur is deep, dense and authoritative in style. A host of black cherries, smoke, mocha, licorice, violets and plums blossom as this pliant, expressive wine shows off its bold personality. Today the tannins are quite overpowering. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 develops a bit better balance in bottle.HK$2,505.00 -

The 2015 La Fleur is forward, open-knit and quite attractive. Hints of cedar, tobacco, mint and dried flowers add aromatic lift and nuance to a core of dark red plum Merlot fruit in this pretty, midweight Saint-Émilion. The 2015 is not super-complex, but it is impeccably balanced. Drink it over the next decade or so.HK$2,505.00 -

The 2016 La Fleur is racy and super-ripe, with elevated alcohol, hard tannins and oxidative notes that make it hard to find much pleasure. I expected more from this Saint-Émilion.HK$3,060.00 -

The 2018 La Fleur (Dassault) is racy and sumptuous to the core. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, sweet spice and mint are all laced together. This luscious, creamy Saint-Émilion has plenty to offer. Fine tannins support a finish of real substance and persistence.HK$3,000.00 -

The wine was a little closed when I tasted it, but I want to remind readers that I forgot to include the 2011 La Fleur Morange in my review of that vintage in Issue #212 and it is a real winner. It is a stunning example of the vintage and quite drinkable and showy at present. The 2011 is the same blend as the 2013.HK$6,810.00 -
Indulge your palate with 'La Fleur Morange 2020', a compelling Saint-Emilion Grand Cru from the Bordeaux region of France. Made from 100% Merlot grapes, revered winemakers Véronique and Jean-François Despagne masterfully cultivate the La Fleur Morange vineyard's century-old vines. The couple hand-harvests the grapes, conducting an intensive and meticulous sorting process to ensure quality. Post-harvest, the grapes undergo fermentation in concrete vats, then mature in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months for optimum flavour.
The result is a full-bodied red crafted in the traditional Bordeaux style, known for its robust structure, rich, rounded tannins, and elegant, intoxicating aroma marked by dark fruits and hints of cocoa. Reflecting the producer's commitment to terroir expression, La Fleur Morange 2020 delivers a unique balance between magnitude and elegance, making it an unforgettable testament to the art of fine winemaking.

Crafted with precision, this wine is a harmonious blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, meticulously handpicked from the finest vineyards. (12x75cl) 1998Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (85)
Medium red. Cherry, licorice, mint and a whiff of raw oak on the nose. Juicy and fairly intensely flavored, but with somewhat green flavors. Finishes with rather dry tannins. My sample of the 2000 was tart and underripe; it hard to believe that the sample was representative. The '99 was also green, and the tannins were astringent.HK$12,300.00 -
(1x75cl) 2004Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-88)
Good ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry syrup and dark chocolate, plus a whiff of meat. Sweet and supple but a bit undifferentiated, with medicinal notes of cherry- and chocolate-flavored cough syrup. Densely packed but could use some more high notes; still seems a bit youthfully stunted. Broad finish features tongue-coating tannins.HK$1,140.00 -
(1x500cl) 2005Wine Advocate (96)
The finest La Gaffeliere I have ever tasted, the prodigious 2005 boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a flamboyant bouquet of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, blackberries, smoked meats, incense, and Asian spice. Fabulously deep and full-bodied as well as ethereal and exceptionally elegant for its explosive richness and intensity, its lightness of being reflects the vineyard’s sensational terroir. This succulent beauty appears to be approachable, but that belies some significant tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030+.HK$6,980.00 -
Wine Advocate (95+)
An absolutely spectacular effort, the 2009 is one of the all-time great La Gaffelieres produced. One would have to go back to the 2005, 1947 or 1961 to find this level of quality from this ancient, historic vineyard planted adjacent to the walls of St.-Emilion, on the Cote Pavie. Dating back to the 1400s, this estate has been owned for over three centuries by the Malet-Roquefort family. Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc (in the past it was two-thirds Merlot and the rest split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc), the 2009 reveals compelling elegance, tremendous intensity and opulence and more viscosity than one normally sees. Lots of kirsch, licorice, incense, truffle, asphalt, blackberry and cassis notes dominate the aromatics and flavors of this full-bodied, viscous, fabulously pure, flamboyant St.-Emilion. Drinking it now may be considered infanticide by some consumers, but it is already attractive, and should last for 3-4 decades.HK$14,150.00 -
Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)
A wine of total finesse, the 2014 La Gaffelière is gorgeous. Dark and pliant on the palate, with striking nuance, it presents a striking interplay of juicy Merlot fruit and lifted, Cabernet Franc-inflected aromatics. Silky tannins add to the wine's exceptional feel and precision. The blend is 80 % Merlot and 20 % Cabernet Franc. The 2014 spent 25-30 days on the skins, while malolactic fermentation took place partly in tank and partly in barrique. Consulting oenologists Stéphane Derenoncourt and Simon Blanchard did a fabulous job with the 2014. In a word: superb!HK$2,205.00 -

The 2015 La Gaffelière is a wine of total finesse. Much less obvious and overt than most Saint-Émilions in this vintage, La Gaffelière makes its case on harmony and grace above all else. Bright, lifted Cabernet Franc–infused aromatics give the 2015 striking freshness and aromatic presence. The flavors are bright and nuanced to the core, with plenty of red cherry, espresso and floral notes. But back to the basics. In 2015 La Gaffelière is a wine that stands out because of its impeccable balance and sense of proportion. I loved it. Tasted two times.HK$9,330.00 -

The 2017 La Gaffeliere is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal fragrant scents of kirsch, black raspberries and warm plums plus suggestions of unsmoked cigars, rosehip tea and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic elegance and sophistication, with tons of bright, perfumed fruit and exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing with bags of freshness and energy. Since the lower-lying sections of La Gaffeliere were affected by frost this year, this wine mainly comes from the section up on the Saint-Émilion plateau, near Ausone. Truly impressive!HK$4,075.00 -
