The 2023 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is impressive. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, menthol, chocolate, dried herbs and crème de cassis are dialed up to the maximum. This dark, explosive Saint-Julien hits all the right notes. There's gorgeous textural depth and density in this virile, imposing 2023.HK$1,980.00 -

94-96 A solid, chunky wine. It has powerful dry tannins, although they are never dominant, leaving the sweet fruit to shine. Blackberry flavors and the dark core are becoming well integrated.HK$4,440.00 -

A medium-bodied red with blackberry and plum character, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Second wine of Gruaud-Larose.HK$1,670.00 -

The 2017 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a pretty second wine built on floral aromatics and silky red/purplish berry fruit. Given its mid-weight structure, I would prefer to drink the Sarget on the early side.HK$2,430.00 -
James Suckling (91-92)
A juicy and fresh red with dark berries and hints of chocolate. Medium to full body, firm and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Delicious already.HK$2,860.00 -

The 2019 Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a tasty second wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, cedar and tobacco all open in the glass. The 2019 shows good density, with firm, muscular tannins that wrap around the finish. Although a bit rustic, the Sarget has good depth and plenty of character.HK$1,215.00 -

The 2020 Sarget de Gruaud has a quite a high-toned, floral bouquet with violet and blueberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, fine acidity and just slight peppery notes towards the finish but with very commendable length for a Deuxième Vin. Very fine.HK$2,535.00 -
The Drinks Business (90-92+)
Sarget de Gruaud Larose (St Julien; 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot; tasted, hastily, at the property with Arnaud Frédéric). Like Le Petit Lion, this is a very fine genuine second wine in a vintage in which they are few and far between. Pure, precise, crunchy cassis fruit on the nose and, again, on the palate. This is impressively constructed for a second wine in a difficult vintage. The quality of the tannin management is particularly notable, imparting a lovely svelte texture despite the not inconsiderable density. Brilliantly fresh and nicely balanced on the finish. BravoHK$1,785.00 -

(1x37.5cl) 1986Wine Advocate (96)
A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. Last tasted, 6/02.HK$1,265.00 -

Big and rustic, with lots of raisin and berry aromas and flavors and full, velvety tannins. Not classy, but has an impressive concentration of fruit. Try after 1997.HK$13,105.00 -

A sweet, soft, commercially-styled wine, the 1994 offers a medium deep ruby color, a smoky, berry-scented nose, supple, fruity flavors, medium body, no hard tannin (a rarity for a 1994), and an easy to understand finish. Drink it over the next 4-8 years.HK$6,815.00 -

There is a great link here between the tannins, delicious red berry fruits and blackcurrants and the almost architectural structure. The wine certainly has fine fruit, a great balance, very complete, finishing gently, ripe and soft.HK$12,200.00 -

93-95 Barrel sample. Huge black currant flavors, very ripe fruit, but also a great sense of balance, of proportion that give this wine both charm and impressiveness. It's going to age seriously, and well.HK$10,290.00 -

Melted tannins, juicy black fruits, finessed appellation signature, this opens to grilled blackberry and bilberries, brambed and pureed, with slate tannins and a wave of campfire smoke. Well balanced acidity also, this is charming, joyful and ready to drink but with plenty of life ahead. One to look out for.HK$6,745.00 -
