Spicy oak, ripe black cherries, and floral nuances emerge from the 2022 Château Desmirail, a medium-bodied, elegant, seamless Margaux offering polished tannins, just about flawless balance, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out. If it picks up weight with 2-4 years in the cellar, the score will seem low. The 2022 is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.HK$4,000.00 -

Full ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry coulis, violet and bitter chocolate, complicated by smoky, toasty oak. Sweet, lush and ripe, with good depth to the black cherry and smoky oak flavors. Broad and mouthfilling. Finishes with dusty, sweet tannins that reach the front teeth. A very strong effort for this property. (I found the '06 lean and tart by comparison, in need of more sweetness and stuffing.)HK$7,250.00 -

The 2016 Destieux has turned out beautifully. A gorgeous, modern Saint-Émilion, Destieux offers tremendous depth and textural resonance from the outset. Dark, jammy fruit, chocolate, spice and new leather take on exotic shades of dimension. Destieux is a decidedly flamboyant Saint-Émilion endowed with superb richness and tons of sheer appeal. This is a terrific showing.HK$4,475.00 -

The 2018 Destieux has a lovely, ripe, blueberry and cassis scented bouquet with violet petals that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet saturated tannins and moderate acidity. It lacks a little structure on the finish and the new oak is too vocal, but hopefully that will resolve itself by the time of bottling. Let’s see.HK$4,475.00 -

The 2019 Destieux is packed with inky dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice and sweet oak. This flamboyant Saint-Émilion is all about immediacy and textural richness, both of which it has in spades, as well as the tannic grip of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not often seen in Saint-Émilion.HK$4,360.00 -

The 2020 Destieux has a clean but slightly overdone nose with light peppermint scents coming through with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with quite dense tannins. It's plush but less overbearing than I have found previous vintages of Destieux, managing to retain some freshness and precision on the finish. I'll keep an eye on this.HK$4,340.00 -

I loved the 2021 Château Destieux, a classy, medium-bodied, impressive 2021 that has ample darker berry fruits, some classy background oak, ripe tannins, and textbook Saint-Emilion notes of graphite, crushed stone, and leafy herbs. It's beautiful today yet should benefit from just a few years of bottle age.HK$4,360.00 -

91-93 Barrel sample. Well structured, this has dry tannins over vivid black fruits. It shows acidity but also great juicy sweetness.HK$4,115.00 -

The 2016 Deyrem Valentin is soft, plush and inviting. Dark cherry, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are pushed forward in a silky, supple Margaux that offers tremendous near and medium term appeal. Floral notes add brightness on the finish as the 2016 acquires a bit more finesse with time in the glass.HK$2,545.00 -

The 2017 Deyrem Valentin has come together nicely during élevage. It remains a bit light in body, and yet all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry fruit, mint, sweet tobacco and cedar add nuance throughout. There is a lot to like in this approachable, mid-weight Margaux.HK$2,515.00 -

The 2018 Deyrem Valentin is very perfumed on the nose, offering blackberry, blueberry, touches of violet petal and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a silky-smooth texture and a vibrant, minerally finish that lingers. This is a gorgeous, finely tuned and precise Margaux that is going to give 20 years of drinking pleasure.HK$2,065.00 -

The 2020 Deyrem Valentin retains its precocious, licorice-tinged bouquet, pressed iris flowers, hints of candied orange peel emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, a little soft on the finish but with satisfying length. This will be quite approachable and should drink over the next decade.HK$1,450.00 -

The 2021 Deyrem Valentin contains more Cabernet this year at 75% of the blend. This really shows on the nose that is dark in fruit with lifted graphite and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite fresh, slightly chalky in texture, maybe missing just a little sensuality on the finish. It needs three years to fully absorb the oak. But there is a citrus element to this Margaux that I like, with satisfying length.HK$1,520.00 -

NHB. Creamy and different. Then really tight and introverted on the finish. These Didier Dageuneau wines taste as though the yields were pretty low and the grapes were very concentrated. Cool and without obvious richness. Some real grip and obvious ageing potential.HK$5,550.00 -

The last time I tasted the 2009 Doisy-Daëne, I felt it was in a dumb phase. This bottle suggests that it is no longer in that phase! It has a lovely bouquet with honey, white peach, nougat and light marzipan scents, growing in intensity with just a touch of lavender. Wonderful definition. The palate is very well defined with superb concentration, a surfeit of botrytis, tangy marmalade and quince notes with a touch of ginger enlivening the finish. What an outstanding Doisy-Daëne! Tasted at the vertical at Doisy-Daëne.HK$1,925.00 -

The 2014 Doisy-Daëne has a fragrant bouquet with dried honey, almond, peach skin and orange blossom aromas that gently unfold with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and poised with a captivating undercurrent of mineralité that surfaces towards the finish and counters the richness of this finely made Sauternes. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.HK$770.00 -

The first bottle of 2016 Doisy-Daëne was corked. The second is clean and precise on the nose, offering honeycomb, lanolin, crushed rocks and light yellow flower aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, and a fine bead of acidity cuts through the intense botrytized fruit. Very harmonious and poised, with impressive intensity on the finish. This is a marvelous Sauternes. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.HK$1,800.00 -
(12x37.5cl) 2017Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)
The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is so compelling. Rich and ample in the glass, the 2017 just blossoms with a bit of time. Candied apricot, exotic white flowers, mint, hazelnut and chamomile notes confer richness. The 2017 is deep, powerful and wonderfully resonant from start to finish. Moreover, it has very few peers in this vintage, one of them being the top-of-the line L'Extravagant.HK$1,980.00 -

The 2019 Doisy-Daëne has a gorgeous bouquet of wild honey, quince, saffron and touch of shucked oyster shell, intense and utterly seductive. The palate is well balanced, taut and fresh, with a fine bead of such perfectly pitched acidity that you barely notice the botrytized finish. An outstanding wine from Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu.HK$2,030.00 -

Rich and powerful, this is a seductive Barsac that has a great balance of acidity and sweetness, nothing too over the top, full of lime zest and mandarin, with tongue-licking slate on the finish. Great stuff, extremely well balanced. A yield of 16hl/ha. 10 months in barrel for ageing followed by nine months in stainless steel.HK$3,545.00
